Pink-tutu.com - Post #1080: Twirling Back to 2009 – December!

Hello my lovelies! Emma here, your very own time-travelling, pink-tutu-wearing, drag queen blogger from the heart of Derbyshire! Welcome back to another monthly romp through the fabulous history of drag! Today, we're going back to December 2009, darling!

So grab your tea, grab your biscuits, and let’s get ready to sashay, twirl and vogue!

2009 - The year of the…wait, what’s going on?!

Oh darling! December 2009! What a time it was! The world of drag was truly buzzing! The global economic crisis was in full swing, and so was RuPaul’s Drag Race season 2 - can you believe? Honestly, darling, my time-traveling tutu wouldn't even dare to wear a belt buckle after that one - they were truly giving fierce, snatched, and the wigs… Oh, the wigs! Remember that legendary Alexis Mateo lip sync against Morgan McMichaels to ā€œLike a Prayer?ā€ The look, darling, the LOOK. Iconic.

Let’s look at what was happening on the drag scene at this time.

  • RuPaul’s Drag Race! As I mentioned, season two of RuPaul's Drag Race was on our screens! This iconic season saw queens like Raven, Jujubee, and Tyra Sanchez battling it out for the crown and the opportunity to prove that, "you can't look at a queen, and think she’s just a drag queen!ā€ We saw incredible moments: fierce lip syncs, heartfelt stories, and hilarious shenanigans! I mean, just look at those iconic Snatch Game performances. Pure magic!
    • International Drag wasn't a phrase we heard much in 2009! Sure, there were shows happening, but Drag Race wasn't dominating the world. It's fantastic how much it's expanded over the years! Drag shows have sprung up globally, offering new and diverse expressions of the art! It's truly a testament to the incredible spirit and talent of drag performers.

My Travel Diary Okay, you want to know what my travels have taught me? I truly believe every era had something to offer, just like in fashion. Looking back on December 2009, drag was changing in its own way - but we could really see the foundations being set for the future. Imagine how a few years later the global phenomenon of Drag Race, and then even further out in time, a drag queen blogger who’s had time travel adventures and a love for tutus (me! winks)!

My time travel journal is so full, darling! It is a fashion diary full of my favourite moments from December 2009. * I travelled to London! London was electric that December. We saw Lady Gaga! Yes, darling, a young Gaga was bringing her ā€˜The Fame Ball Tour’ to the stage. Remember that ā€œPaparazziā€ music video, or that sparkly metallic dress that had everyone swooning? We can truly learn a thing or two about camp, style, and sheer talent! London was abuzz with energy and those London clubs, darling! Let’s just say, I sparkled. * I travelled to the United States, naturally! And I saw Pandora Boxx! At Jackie Beat's Hot Boxx Show! Jackie Beat and Pandora Boxx, together, at The Westside Comedy Club! You couldn’t find a better place to go for drag comedy back then. That night was truly magical!

And did I tell you I went shopping that day! It was like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the eyes. I got myself the most amazing beaded gown, dripping in rhinestones – swoon!

Here’s a Drag Queen Time Travel Tip for you:
