Hello darlings!
It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, back with another slice of history from the fabulous world of drag! This month, we're twirling back to 5th May, 2010 - a date bursting with glitz, glamour and a touch of campy charm!
As usual, I've been diligently preparing for my little jaunt through time. You see, dear readers, my time machine isn't exactly a DeLorean with a flux capacitor. It's far more... theatrical! Think shimmering, sequined fabric, delicate tulle, and the most gloriously pink tutu imaginable - I call her "Rosalind", of course. After a quick spin on the dance floor to warm up my time-bending abilities, I step into Rosalind, give her a twirl, and voilà! We're off to the past!
Now, I've always had a soft spot for the 2010s. The fashion, the makeup, the ever-evolving scene - pure fabulousness! I mean, come on, it's the era that brought us Lady Gaga's meat dress and a whole lot of glitter. You know me, anything that sparkles gets my heart pumping.
Speaking of sparkling, when I landed in the 2010 scene, the first thing I noticed was how drag was truly blooming across the globe. Not just on a club level, darling, but in theatre, in television, in everything!
Over in London, I discovered that one of the most beloved drag balls of all time, the "Balls at the Dorchester" were happening. It's said that these balls were legendary, attracting the likes of RuPaul and Liza Minnelli – talk about an icon-packed night! Can you imagine the fabulousness of those looks?
Meanwhile, back home in my dear old Derbyshire, I had to catch a local show, "The Little Theatre of Dreams", featuring some fabulous talent in our very own backyard! The local drag scene in Derbyshire, while a little smaller, was as full of energy as the London scene.
Of course, it wasn’t just the UK bursting with drag, honey! Across the pond, the legendary "The Wigstock Ball" was taking place, a drag spectacle unlike any other in New York. Think high-concept costumes, high-energy dance routines and an audience screaming with delight.
Even in Australia, I discovered a new star on the scene - "Courtney Act". Now, she might not have a pink tutu like me (but honestly, honey, who can blame her for wanting a taste of that pink magic?), but her style is pure charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent - those C.U.N.T. qualities are truly inspiring!
Seeing drag artists making their mark all around the world really filled my heart with pink tulle happiness. And it made me realize, even back in 2010, drag was so much more than just a club night or a theatrical performance – it was a global movement of creativity, empowerment, and, of course, fashion.
Talking of fashion, the 2010's scene was brimming with fabulousness. A whole lot of tulle, lots of bold colours, a whole lot of glitter (because honestly, can you ever have too much glitter, darling?), and just the perfect mix of high-fashion and avant-garde designs. It really makes me want to raid my vintage clothing store and get to work on my next fabulous pink tutu look!
I also stumbled upon some interesting fashion finds online. In 2010, a group called "The Pink Tutu Society" popped up on the internet, with an aim to bring more awareness about ballet, dancers, and, well, you guessed it, tutus! They even organised "Pink Tutu Parties" - now those sound like a good time to me! I'll be sure to make one myself at my next event!
But you know me, my dear readers, the best part of any time-travel adventure is getting to meet the drag legends of the day. While in the US, I got to catch a performance of "Divine’s Last Supper", a campy and iconic drag performance that, frankly, put the 'camp' back into the drag! It was full of wild costumes, exaggerated makeup, and the most gloriously subversive comedy! Now, those are the kind of shows I love!
On my way back to present-day, I made sure to bring some memories back with me! Not just of those iconic shows and artists but of the vibrant and energetic drag scene that was shaping the future of the art. As a reminder, I even grabbed some fantastically bright, neon-coloured wigs, some glitter bombs (the more, the better!), and a bunch of fabulous sparkly tulle to use for my own future creations. I’ve always got to add some magic to my outfits, right?
That’s all for this month, darlings! I hope you enjoyed this whirlwind trip through the drag scene of 5th May, 2010! But don’t forget, a pink tutu and some glitter are the perfect combo for any trip through time. You know what to do! Stay pink, stay glamorous and keep on twirling!
**XOXO,
Emma**
