Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveler! I’m just back from another exhilarating adventure in the past, and trust me, you’re going to want to hear about it. Today we're going all the way back to June 2010 – can you believe it? I’ve been so busy strutting my stuff in the dazzling world of drag (and perfecting the perfect pink tutu spin), I hardly had time to check my time travel calendar!
Now, you know me, I always travel in style – especially when it comes to my favourite accessory, the pink tutu! I've always said it's the key to achieving any fabulous time travelling look. It's got just the right mix of whimsical charm and elegant poise - just like me!
But let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. June 2010? Oh my sweet summer child, the drag scene was booming! There was so much going on it would have been a challenge to even keep up. From bustling cities like New York and London to vibrant, hidden gems around the globe, the world was ready to be painted pink by the amazing talents of our sisterhood.
So, without further ado, let’s step into my time-traveling tutu and whisk ourselves away to this unforgettable month.
New York: Drag Races and Glamour GaloreAh, New York! The heart of the drag universe was as fierce as ever in June 2010. We’re talking the Big Apple’s hottest nightclubs buzzing with performances, fashion shows, and the ultimate drag experience: RuPaul’s Drag Race. You’d have thought a glitter storm had just swept through Times Square because girl, it was iconic!
Imagine my delight, darling! It’s the time of the show’s second season – with queens like Raven, Tyra Sanchez, and Jujubee. They were serving major looks, sass, and unforgettable performances, leaving us all glued to our seats! Honestly, the whole competition felt electric – it was clear that drag was truly having its moment!
Just outside the show, New York’s streets were teeming with drag excellence. At The Stonewall Inn, the scene was always electrifying, but this month, they were playing host to Divine Inspiration, a captivating tribute to the one and only Divine. Can you imagine being there to celebrate this queen? It would be a true drag devotee’s dream!
London: A Capital City of Drag ExcellenceLondon was as ever a playground of flamboyant fashion, where drag queens took centre stage at the iconic Royal Vauxhall Tavern. This was truly one of my favorite spots in the entire world – just a kaleidoscope of brilliance and creativity!
Think London and the world of drag and there’s one name that immediately springs to mind: Miss Penny Proud, who reigned supreme over The Proud Cabaret Club, London’s favourite destination for all things drag. Can you imagine joining this amazing woman at her own cabaret? Now, that’s what I call a night out, darlings!
Remember, I wasn’t the only one obsessed with drag and all its splendor – Queen Mary, the former British monarch, actually hosted The Proud Cabaret as part of the annual Royal Ascot Festival at Ascot Racecourse. Now that is drag taking the stage to a whole new level of royal fabulousness, wouldn't you say? I think that Queen Mary knew what was up. She could’ve worn a pink tutu to this event - a pink-tutu queen through and through!
Europe: A Continent Full of Sparkling PerformancesLet's not forget our continent, Europe! The world of drag was truly booming – every country felt like it was holding its own fabulous celebration of all things queer, campy and creative! I have to admit, I'm a total drag tourist at heart, and this month, I was positively thrilled to get my time traveling tutu on and go on a proper tour across Europe!
We’ll start in Amsterdam where the very fashionable Stellabout, the queen of high-fashion drag, was getting her strut on, leaving no drag-loving heart untouched by her style and sass.
We're talking elaborate, head-turning, outfits, makeup that was almost a work of art, and, of course, she wore the perfect pink tutu, adding her own unique touch to the iconic look. Let's face it, the world needed to see Stellabout rocking the tutu, just as much as she needed to wear it, and the ladies of Amsterdam certainly weren’t disappointed.
Let’s take a leap over to Berlin, a drag queen’s paradise, and to the iconic Muff’s Club where there were tons of great shows going on all through June, proving to be a drag devotee's absolute dream spot!
The drag scene in Berlin was already a global phenomenon – with tons of performers like Dadaismus, Leandra & Kim Wilde, and even Divine Inspiration heading to the city to wow its very discerning audience. I mean, who needs fashion week, when you’ve got Berlin drag? It really did leave everyone wanting more.
But wait, darling, it’s not just the established drag superstars who had the power to blow us all away. This month, a new generation of drag talent started their climb to fame. And every single one of them could strut their way onto the stage with the confidence and pizzazz of a true queen.
Global Glamour: A Global Tour with my Pink TutuAnd it wasn't just New York, London, and Berlin. I took my trusty pink tutu all the way to Japan, Mexico, Australia and even India! All those countries were buzzing with Drag culture, a true testament to its universal appeal! It was really the highlight of my month.
And what made it so special? I mean, who doesn’t love a world-traveling drag queen with a pink tutu, right?
We’re talking fashion, performance art, activism – and of course, plenty of glitz, glam, and glitter, all rolled into one. Every city, every club, every performance had its own flavour, its own style, its own unique touch. And to see it all in the beautiful glow of June was a truly beautiful and exhilarating experience.
My favourite part? Meeting other drag queens, from different parts of the world. Sharing their stories, exchanging tips on how to create the perfect makeup look, discussing the importance of being your most authentic self and all those other precious little pieces that make up the amazing world of drag. I swear, it's like we speak a language only we understand!
And oh my, you would not believe the tutus I saw! Every single one a beautiful masterpiece! I even met a drag queen in Australia who actually taught me some new twirls and dips that really put my dance moves to the test!
Remember darling, every performance, every outfit, and even my own pink tutu is a statement, a powerful symbol that makes me feel seen and validated in the world. But don't forget, darling, the true heart of drag is not about the makeup or the wardrobe – although don't get me wrong, the look is always important! It’s about courage, expressing yourself freely, celebrating individuality and letting your inner fabulousness shine, just like we saw in all of the brilliant shows and performances from across the world.
But let’s be honest: what's a good time-traveling pink-tutu adventure without a little shopping spree? Well, I’ve been saving that special reveal for you! My travel chest is bursting with all the newest fashions and accessories! We’ll explore those gems together next month.
So join me for our next adventure, as we revisit a different era, step into another pink tutu, and dive deep into the ever-evolving history of drag! In the meantime, get ready to celebrate and embrace your inner queen, and if you’re feeling really extra, wear that pink tutu – I certainly will!
See you next month, my loves, and keep shining bright!
