Today's date - oh, darling! January the first, 2011! That's a real pinkest-of-pink day for a girl who loves to shimmy and sparkle. Why? Well, you'll just have to buckle up and read on, loves.
I woke up this morning feeling like a fresh, crisp, perfectly pink petticoat, ready to make the world my stage. I donned my finest pink tutu (a beautiful hand-stitched creation, with the tiniest little pink sequin detail around the waistline, darling!), grabbed my trusty time-travelling tutu (trust me, if I could only wear this one to my shows every night, I would!), and poof! Here I am, ready to dive into history!
Where am I off to today, you ask? Well, darling, itās a real pink-filled adventure, so keep those fabulous stilettos at the ready, as we journey to none other thanā¦ New York City, USA! Yes, darlings, a trip across the pond for our little drag adventure!
The scene is buzzing, as the Big Apple starts the new year in true fashion. Now, don't get your pearls in a twist, darling! It's not exactly what you might expect. Thinkā¦ āDrag Raceā, but back when it was a really new thing! The iconic āRuPaulās Drag Raceā had its debut on television just last February, but, honey, let me tell you, drag wasnāt exactly on the front page of newspapers. Now, weāre the ones making those headlines, darlings, and thank the fashion gods we are, but 2011 was just at the start of something truly fabulous, in terms of Dragās place in the world.
It wasnāt all doom and gloom though, not for these glamorous gals, you see. As I'm strutting my way through Times Square, what do I find but an exciting event taking place! āRuPaul's Drag Race Season 3 premiere!" Now, darlings, this is what we call a pink moment. This very first day of the year, they are holding a red carpet event for all to see. Can you imagine? My heart was singing with anticipation, honey! And wouldn't you know it, but there's even an event at XL Nightclub! Can you imagine? They have Chad Michaels in town performing, and Iām practically hopping with excitement, wanting to snatch a glimpse of this drag legend in action. You know me, loves, always keen to learn from the masters. I couldn't resist putting on my biggest pink bow, snagged from a boutique in the Lower East Side (I canāt get enough of those hidden treasures, my love!) and strutted into XL, honey, and got myself right to the front! I knew you were going to adore hearing about this! š
But here's the real kicker, darlings: not only is the New York drag scene a supernova, the rest of the world is feeling that glitter too! You know how we love our drag family, donāt we, darling? And while things might be different for drag queens around the world, everyone is doing their bit for fabulousness.
In London, drag queen Alfie Ordinary was busy getting ready for the upcoming Drag Idol season! And you know what, it reminds me, darlings - donāt let anyone tell you there's no place for the ordinary, for ordinary can be the most extraordinary thing in the world, you know. Ordinary is something to celebrate! We all deserve a platform to shine, donāt we! (Now you know how my mind works!). The *drag community is such a global family, a melting pot of talents and personalities! *
Just imagine the fabulousness happening all over the world right now. In Spain, our queens are prepping for āDrag Race EspaƱaā while our gals in Brazil were working their way through a legendary performance in Rio! It's all happening, and, you know, as a drag historian at heart, Iām incredibly lucky to be witnessing this beautiful global journey of expression! š
And before you ask, yes, darlings, itās absolutely all thanks to that magical pink tutu! Every month I choose a day to travel through time, and see where my pink tutu and I can make a little magic! But darling, you know what? I have a little secret to share. I canāt do it without you. Itās our passion, our dreams and our fierce energy that helps the time travelling tutu make itās magic, darling! And who knows what fabulous day will pop up on my calendar next!
As the world of drag spins faster and faster, darling, know this ā we are all part of a giant kaleidoscope, shining so bright! We just gotta keep our pink tutus high and keep that sparkle burning, loves. š
