#DragQueenHistory: 12th December 2010 - Oh Darling, Let's Go Back in Time!

Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your resident time-travelling tutu enthusiast, back with another fabulous #DragQueenHistory adventure. This month, I’ve swished my way back to December 12th, 2010, and oh my, what a fabulous trip it was!

My magical pink tutu whirled me through the air, a swirl of glittery pink sequins, as I landed in… drumroll… the glorious city of New York City. Now, this city is known for its fierce drag scene, and darling, the scene was poppin' in 2010!

First stop, The Stonewall Inn, the legendary birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. It was 44 years after the Stonewall Riots and, although I couldn't see any rioting happening, it was fascinating to see the Inn buzzing with life and celebrating the achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. Just as it still is today, The Stonewall Inn felt like a beacon of acceptance and love, reminding me that even when faced with adversity, we can find strength in unity and a love for ourselves.

As I sashayed through the streets of NYC, I found myself mesmerized by the incredible fashion on display. Drag was blooming and fierce queens were serving looks left and right. Now, darling, there’s something truly fabulous about seeing a queen looking fierce, all in pink and tulle. In a street style magazine, I saw a photo of a queen looking utterly phenomenal, with her perfectly winged eyeliner and a pink feather boa draped around her shoulders. The photo made my inner ballerina queen positively giddy.

Now, the NYC drag scene was all about innovation. Bianca Del Rio was creating ripples, serving her iconic ā€˜not gonna do anything else’ persona and solidifying her position as one of the drag powerhouses to come. It's almost impossible to talk about NYC drag in 2010 without mentioning the groundbreaking documentary ā€œParis Is Burningā€. The film, celebrating its 25th anniversary, offered a captivating glimpse into the raw and vibrant world of Harlem drag balls. It felt as though I was truly immersed in drag history, soaking it all in, understanding its importance, and the strength it offered the LGBTQ+ community.

And who could forget RuPaul’s Drag Race? The second season had just wrapped, and the queen who took the crown? The fabulous and utterly unforgettable, Raven, her fierce lip-syncing, flawless makeup and ever-changing hairstyles inspiring countless young queens. This era was truly all about innovation and seeing the world of drag flourish with creativity and sheer artistic talent!

However, my journey wasn’t solely based in the bright lights of New York City. My pink tutu zipped me across the globe, bringing me to a glorious drag show in the UK! In London, Divas on the Loose, a group of stunning queens, had launched their first show, a spectacle of amazing costumes, electrifying performances and an atmosphere overflowing with pure joy. Their performances brought out a raw and captivating energy, showcasing a diverse range of drag talent from across the UK. The spirit was so exciting; you could practically feel the magic in the air.

From the flamboyant runway walks of London’s ā€˜Divas on the Loose’ to the poignant beauty of ā€œParis Is Burning,ā€ this year showed the true strength and creative power of drag.

The lesson learned? It doesn’t matter where you’re from or how you define your style – if you dare to be bold and fierce, your voice and artistry will be heard. The global drag community was booming in 2010 and showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. So, darling, if you haven’t yet started to explore your drag spirit, then now is the perfect time! Get your pink tutu, find your fiercest voice and be prepared to shine, because drag, my lovelies, is an unstoppable force.

And oh, darling! Before I disappear into another timeline, I simply HAVE to mention the legendary drag queen Divine! On this very day in 1988, the iconic star, best known for her collaborations with John Waters, tragically passed away. Divine was a trailblazer, a queen whose unique, and let’s be honest, a bit campy, personality brought a wild, unfiltered, and wildly comedic element to the drag world. Her influence resonates with drag queens even today, inspiring us to embrace individuality, break boundaries, and be relentlessly fabulous!

This was another fabulous adventure back through #DragQueenHistory. It's amazing how quickly time flies, especially when you're surrounded by beautiful things. The energy in the drag scene was bubbling, creative, exciting, and definitely something that is still so apparent today. So let's embrace the future, let’s celebrate all the fabulous divas that paved the way, and most importantly, let’s continue to build our global drag community - a space for all forms of fabulousness to blossom and flourish.

Until next month darlings, stay glamorous!
