#DragQueenHistory: A Tutu Time-Travelling Tale of 2010 & 2011! 💅✨🩰

Hello darlings! Your favourite time-travelling, tutu-obsessed drag queen is back with another fabulously factual journey through the shimmering history of drag! 💋 This month, we’re shimmying back to 2010 and 2011, the years that saw some truly spectacular developments in the world of drag, so get ready for some tea, some sass, and some glorious pink-tutu-worthy fashion!

Now, before we begin, I need to give a shout-out to the fab Derbyshire locals who made it possible for me to time-travel this month. Those donations from the fabulous benefit show I performed in – a dazzling production with a truly exquisite, shimmery, feathered headpiece – helped send me whizzing through time in my trusty magical pink tutu! The power of community and fabulous performance truly is remarkable, isn’t it? 💖

But now, let's get to the juicy gossip of 2010! This year was all about the evolution of the drag scene. You see, the power of the internet was taking centre stage, bringing a whole new dimension to how we share and consume our beloved drag culture!

A Global Village of Drag Queens!

Now, picture this: it’s 2010 and drag queens all over the world are suddenly interconnected! Drag race is going viral, and queens are finding their fame far beyond their local nightclubs. Just think of RuPaul! This fabulous American diva was making waves with "RuPaul's Drag Race," sparking a global fascination with drag and creating a phenomenal platform for queens.

2011: Drag Queen History in the Making!

Let me tell you, the queens of 2011 were certainly strutting their stuff! Drag was making waves globally and, let me tell you, my heart was skipping a beat with excitement. The beauty of 2011 was that drag wasn’t limited to one type, there was something for everyone!

Remember, this is where we started seeing more variety in drag styles and performances! From camp comedy to fierce voguing and all things in between, the world was embracing the fabulous diversity of drag!

Now, one of the biggest names in the drag scene at this time was Miss Fame. This fabulous American queen was turning heads with her iconic beauty and fierce, sculpted fashion. Let's just say Miss Fame was an absolute icon in 2011, pushing the boundaries of drag make-up, fashion and hair, giving us a masterclass in beauty that was just, well, sensational!

But don’t forget about another beauty queen from this era: Bianca Del Rio! She became one of the most recognisable queens of the time! Now, while you might not see many queens wearing her famous "Bianca del Rio" pink wig these days, this queen was certainly making a statement! Bianca was, and still is, a comedian with razor-sharp wit and incredible fashion sense, proving once again that the magic of drag is limitless.

And while we’re on the subject of Drag Race, let’s give a quick nod to season four which started that year! Sharon Needles took the crown as the season’s winner with her outlandish fashion and macabre humor! It’s safe to say Sharon truly blew everyone’s minds and set the scene for an era of dramatic and avant-garde drag, changing the game completely!

Fashion Forward! The Evolution of the Drag Queen Aesthetic

Now, we can’t discuss the world of drag in 2010 and 2011 without giving a nod to fashion! These were pivotal years, and oh honey, let me tell you, fashion in the drag world was about to take a seriously fabulous turn!

It wasn't all about flamboyant feather boas and extravagant gowns – no, my darlings, we were embracing sleek, high fashion, couture drag, and drag queens were finding new ways to push the boundaries of beauty and self-expression through their outfits!

I remember seeing Bianca del Rio perform in one of those gorgeous black jumpsuits - it was absolutely fabulous, my dears! It wasn't your traditional, heavily feathered gown, it was a different kind of fabulous, sleek, and structured, just dripping in cool!

And let’s not forget Miss Fame! Her fashion was another iconic moment in drag history, pushing boundaries with avant-garde and couture looks ! These iconic beauties were showcasing drag as an art form and bringing high fashion into the world of drag - oh, the fabulous things!
