Post #1098: Twirling Through Time - June 2011 - A Pink Tutu Odyssey

Helloooo my darling drag divas! It’s your pink tutu loving, time travelling pal Emma here, and oh my gosh, are you ready for a shocking tale? Grab your popcorn, a pink lemonade, and a sparkly feather boa - it’s time to travel back in time to June 2011!

June 2011? Oh, the drama! It’s hard to believe, darlings, but back then, my little world of time-travelling in my magical pink tutu was just getting started. Remember when I first started blogging about this wild adventure, and I was like “ooh, what will I see next?” Well, in June 2011, let’s just say, darling, I stumbled upon a major drag happening, and it wasn’t just on the stage…

But first, fashion! Now, darling, you know me, I’m always on the hunt for the perfect pink tutu. This month, darling, my tutu obsession took me to New York City for some vintage hunting. Now, don’t you judge! New York might not scream "ballet" like Derbyshire, but oh, darling, I found absolute gems! Imagine a dusty antique shop with hidden treasures waiting to be unveiled - vintage ballet shoes with perfectly worn-down pink ribbons, silk tutus so big, you could fit an entire orchestra inside (but please don't, the sequins might shed!). I’ll let you into a secret - the lady in the shop said the tutu I snagged belonged to a real ballerina - maybe even a prima ballerina! Ooh, darling. Can you imagine the stories this tutu could tell? Just wait for my next performance in my "Prima Ballerina" tutu, my dears!

Oh, and let’s not forget the shopping, my loves! Bloomingdales, Saks, Bergdorf Goodman! You’d be hard-pressed to find a drag queen who doesn’t go a little wild for these fashion houses. Of course, with a pinch of glitter and a spritz of sass, any department store can become a runway show, even in derbyshire, right, lovelies?

Speaking of derbyshire, it was June, darling, the air was warm, the sky was blue, and the local village square was all set for our annual ‘Bake-off-and-Best-Pink-Tutu’ competition, my favourite event. Let me tell you, those homemade pink tutus, magnificent, my loves, truly magnificent. And, oh my, that year, my friend Donna took the title with her edible, floral-decorated tutu – a pink icing paradise! Truly inspiring, love.

Now, back to the main event, my dear dragsters: June 2011… and the news is full of what? Oh, honey, prepare yourselves. Drag was huge, literally. Everyone was talking about… the one and only RuPaul. It was all about RuPaul’s Drag Race, honey! Season 3 to be exact. It was everywhere, on magazines, blogs, even in the newspapers - imagine that! Drag was on the front pages of newspapers!

Now, back then, my dear little blog wasn’t as big as it is now. But I made a pilgrimage to London. It was like a drag mecca, honey. Everywhere you turned, it was glitter, sequins, and high-heeled fashion! I had the most magical evening, the hottest club in London - I even saw one of the Season 3 girls in the flesh! Raja! Can you believe it? She was so glam! We talked about the latest in fishnets, honey, it was like I’d been waiting my whole life to chat fashion with a Drag Race queen!

Of course, I had to find a show, a drag show to celebrate the month of June 2011. There were so many, darling, that I almost had to time-travel just to catch them all! There was ‘Bingo Night’, darling! That night, the entire place was dressed up! Tutus, sequins, feathery headbands galore! Oh, it was a sight to see, honey, a drag sight to see! And oh darling, the laughter…

The atmosphere in those drag clubs? Electric. Every show felt like a new adventure. It wasn't just about the performances, it was about the community, the support, and the energy. My heart belonged to the stage.

And then came that performance, honey. In this tiny theatre in the heart of Notting Hill. There was this incredible drag queen. She was young, maybe around my age, with a voice that could melt glass, and she poured her heart out in her set. I can’t tell you her real name – her drag persona? Blossom Moon. Blossom… the name, oh it was just so dramatic, just so soothing, a sweet little daisy on a pink tutu...

And this performance, darlings… Oh, my goodness. The emotions… I cried, I swore to myself I’d learn a new song and add it to my set list, instantly. The crowd was captivated. This girl… Blossom Moon, she was just a raw talent, her performance took me back to my childhood, to all my ballet memories. The memories of dreaming of becoming a prima ballerina, twirling on the stage under the dazzling lights…

Now, honey, as I sat there, wiping away a tear from my eyelash mascara (I use pink waterproof, it’s essential!), I realized something big! That moment... that’s what we live for, don’t we? The magic of live performances. The shared moments of laughter, tears, and sheer joy... Those experiences, my loves, they just make us!

This performance, it wasn't about fame. It was about a girl, a young lady with a passion who took to the stage and poured her whole soul into it! I was so proud to be in that audience.

Remember that performance, Blossom Moon, honey, remember the passion, remember how much drag is about heart! It’s that passion, it’s that drive, that makes us feel alive.

And that's what I wanted to share with you all, darling. June 2011 was a month for a little drama on the stage.

But let’s keep on shining, my darlings, keep shining, because even a tiny glimmer can turn into a blinding spotlight on the world’s stage.

Next time I time-travel, who knows, darling? But don't you dare forget - put on your tutu, put on your pink tutu! Let’s spread this message of glittery, sequinned fun, and celebrate every last bit of our passionate lives.

Oh, I can’t wait to see what my next pink tutu escapade holds!

Until next time, darling!

Stay fabulous!

Emma. x
