Hiya darlings! Emma here, back again for another journey through time, in my fabulous pink tutu!
Oh my heavens, how I love my monthly trips through history! It’s just so fascinating seeing how drag has evolved over the years! And January 2014 was no exception! This month, I’m bringing you the delights of Drag Ball culture, RuPaul, and… oh my god, we’re going back to a T-Rex! (Keep reading!)
This month, my fabulous pink tutu took me all around the world! We started in New York City for “Drag Ball,” a glorious gathering of queens showcasing talent, artistry, and sheer fabulousness. Imagine, hundreds of fabulous queens dressed to the nines! I was in heaven.
There were the Legendary Houses: The House of Xtravaganza, the House of Extravaganza, the House of Balenciaga… It’s all about family and the incredible work that drag can do. They strut their stuff and I was just mesmerized by the energy! I mean, just look at the picture of the house of Xtravaganza (oh yes, I always get a picture!)! It just embodies the magic of Drag!
The best thing was that everyone was just so joyful. I felt like I could just soak up all the magic! And I was mesmerised by those extravagant costumes, that sheer boldness and expression – the ultimate fashion statement, if you ask me.
Oh my darling, the beauty! And you’ll NEVER believe who I ran into in New York – RuPaul! It was right after his amazing “Supermodel (You Better Work) video. That song, honey, is such a banger, you just can’t help but bop! We had a lovely chat, him and I. He was lovely, so charming. He even asked me how I liked the pink tutu (he was quite complimentary)!
Speaking of queens… I also had a chance to experience Wigstock! Now, that was truly a party to remember! So much colour, so much glitter, so much LIFE. Oh my god, it just overflowed with positivity. It’s a celebration of all things fabulous! I remember, a drag queen dressed up as T-Rex. I’m not even kidding. T-Rex with a pink tutu, just like me. I think my mind actually short-circuited! It’s so much fun being transported through history, isn’t it? It makes you really consider just how much drag has changed! Oh, and another must-have souvenir (other than a sparkly fan, you can’t forget that): Drag Balls by DJ Big Jim & The Party People. It’s full of incredible tracks that perfectly capture the spirit of Drag Ball! It is pure drag magic on a CD!
Now, on to something totally different… while I was time traveling, I picked up some fun news – Paris was experiencing a surge of new Drag artists! It’s wonderful to see drag taking root in all sorts of new places!
In London, I was stunned by the incredible “The House of Fairycakes” at The Queen Elizabeth Hall. Oh, the beautiful ballet, the glamour of it all! The elegance of it! Those costumes were divine.
Then, I even popped into a Drag workshop in Berlin – now, darling, that was something! We were learning choreography with “Haus der Dragqueens,” just so fabulous. We had a real good time getting down with the choreography, really letting our bodies flow. I can't emphasize enough how important drag is in teaching self-expression, especially for LGBTQ+ communities.
And finally, my darling, before I have to go get ready for my performance tonight (don't worry, I'm back from my travels now!), I need to show you these new additions to my collection – because fashion, is everything! I discovered that in the world of Drag Fashion, the designers JBG Fashion were all the rage in January 2014. You won’t find a single look that isn’t fabulous – a true artist.
My lovelies, don't forget that you can follow my blog at www.pink-tutu.com, I post my latest drag queen time-travel adventures every month.
Don't forget to show the world just how fabulous you are, by putting on your own pink tutu, dear! (I'm giving you all the permission you need!) Until next month!
Xoxo Emma 💖
