Pink-Tutu Post #1133: May 2014 - A Whirlwind Trip to... Where Else But the Stage?!

Hello my darling dears! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time-traveling drag historian, reporting live from... well, wherever my magical pink tutu takes me this month!

This time, my lovely, it’s May 2014, and oh my stars, you wouldn't believe what a fabulous journey it’s been! I simply must share it with you, my sweet readers. Let me spill the tea, as they say in the drag world, because trust me, it’s piping hot!

First things first, let’s talk fashion, darling! I simply must divulge that my latest, totally fabulous pink tutu has taken inspiration from the breathtaking costumes of the Royal Ballet at London’s Covent Garden Opera House. Imagine layers upon layers of tulle in the most exquisite shades of pink, adorned with sequined embellishments, and a bodice that cinches my waist like a dream! The magic of ballet, the allure of drag, all wrapped up in one magnificent garment - a truly breathtaking vision, don’t you think?

Now, where did my magical pink tutu take me this month, you ask? Oh, it was such a whirlwind, my loves, a true voyage of discovery. I’ll tell you this: It involved more sequins, more sass, more hairspray than I’ve ever experienced, even at a DragCon, darling! But, in true drag fashion, the show must go on!

Back To the Stage

Firstly, we headed over to New York City, and honey, was it fabulous! It was 2014 and the energy was absolutely electrifying. The city pulsed with the beat of fabulousity. Now, being in the city that never sleeps, naturally I was drawn to The Stonewall Inn. Imagine, this historic pub - the birthplace of the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights, was packed with drag queens! This was way back before ā€œRuPaul’s Drag Raceā€ and these queens, with their talent and courage, paved the way for the drag phenomenon that it is today. There was an atmosphere of liberation, an undeniable celebration of everything fabulous!

While I was there, I learned of Miss Major, the fierce trans activist who bravely fought for equality, her story filled me with such pride. This lady is a true hero, a reminder that drag is more than just glamour - it’s a statement, an act of resistance, and a call for inclusion. She spoke about her experiences as a drag queen, sharing the joy, but also the difficulties they faced - like fighting against a system that often chose to be unwelcoming. Miss Major was the embodiment of power, strength, and resilience, all packaged in a perfectly styled wig! Her story truly resonated with me, showcasing the crucial role of drag queens in challenging the status quo.

We also took a trip down to Los Angeles darling, to a bar called The Abbey (You know it!) and let me tell you, the nightlife there was truly out of this world! Imagine, drag queens performing to packed crowds, their laughter and music echoing through the streets. The atmosphere was so electrifying, full of energy and the joyous celebration of self-expression. You could feel the history in the air, a connection to those pioneering drag queens who paved the way for today’s stars!

Oh, and you won't believe the fabulousness that unfolded during May 2014. A drag phenomenon by the name of RuPaul’s Drag Race was just heating up, becoming a global sensation! It was incredible, darling, to be transported back in time and watch it all unfold. You know, there's just something about a queen on the verge of winning it all - that ambition, the drive, the confidence! This show took the world by storm, catapulting drag into the spotlight like never before. I, for one, can’t get enough! It's simply glamorous, darling.

We also stumbled upon Pride events across the globe. In London, Pride in the Park was bursting with colours, music, and a sense of joyous celebration. In New York City, NYC Pride was even more spectacular, with iconic marches and the electrifying sounds of drag music. These parades were a magnificent reminder of how far we’ve come, a celebration of freedom and individuality, and a commitment to the fight for equality.

It's a drag queen world, darling.

This trip reminded me, once again, how much I absolutely adore the drag community, with all its fabulous, messy, glorious, heartbreaking, and downright brilliant facets. You see, darling, it's not just about the dazzling costumes, the sparkling makeup, and the hair-raising performances; it's about finding yourself, accepting yourself, celebrating yourself. It's about building a community of love, acceptance, and fierce pride. And as my own little personal mission statement goes - it's about getting everyone to embrace the magnificent world of the pink tutu, because it’s the most glamorous, empowering statement a girl could ever make!

Well, I’ve got to go, darlings. I’m just off to check my next time-travel coordinates, and see where my magic tutu takes me next. I promise I’ll bring you along for the ride, always remembering that life, just like drag, is about the journey! Keep those sequins shining and your spirits high.

Until next time, stay fabulous,
Emma xoxo
