Darlings! Hellooooo, my darlings! Emma here, back with a brand new, positively sparkly and fabulous post for your delightful little eyeballs! It's June 2014 and my magical, oh-so-pink tutu is whirring and twirling me back in time once again. This month, we're taking a trip to⦠oh, let me build the suspense! It's June 2014 and our little time traveling troupe is off to explore the vibrant, vivacious, and endlessly entertaining world of drag in the early 2010s.
This period was a golden era for drag. Everything felt new, fresh and bursting with excitement. Think bright, bold colours, shimmering glitter, fierce makeup, and fierce performances! The world of drag was evolving right before our very eyes, and I just had to be there to witness it!
Firstly, I popped in to the iconic, fabulous Drag Race Season 6! I had been waiting ages for the return of this American drag queen staple. I adore watching all those stunning, beautiful queens competing, lip-syncing, and crafting outlandish outfits! And this season certainly didn't disappoint. This was the year the glorious Bianca Del Rio strutted her way onto the world stage and secured the crown. The first, original, fabulous Bianca! Can I get a "Bianca!" in the comments? Now that's the true essence of drag! She served fierce looks, sassy humour, and endless talent! This season also featured the drag goddess, Adore Delano! A truly captivating artist and one of my biggest idols! Oh, the fabulousness was overflowing!
I wasn't only looking at the televised world, darlings! You know I couldn't let a trip through the annals of drag go without seeing some incredible live shows! So I made my way to London's Soho district. Soho was a true drag Mecca back in the day. And boy did the legendary Soho drag scene deliver. Every week, iconic queens like Michelle Visage were dazzling audiences. You couldn't swing a cat in Soho without landing on a gag-worthy performance. Imagine, Soho filled with sassy and fierce queens in vibrant wigs, daring looks, and an unending energy! Truly the epitome of what makes drag so fascinating. It wasn't just the shows; it was the community, the passion, the camaraderie! All that together made London, back in 2014, an incredibly inspiring and creative hub for drag queens worldwide!
Speaking of hubs, I simply had to pay a visit to NYC. This city truly embodied the melting pot of drag cultures. The energy was electric, darling! You can't really describe it; you just have to experience it for yourself. You walked down the streets and felt the thrum of excitement, creativity and, dare I say, flamboyance! Everyone, including those without the traditional pink tutus, dressed for a show! And, you bet your bottom dollar that there were shows galore. It's where drag pioneers like RuPaul first cut their teeth and made their mark on the world of entertainment. I could feel history pulsating in the streets of NYC, and my heart couldn't help but flutter with excitement.
But darling, don't let me bore you with only my own, personal journey through this glamorous timeline! The entire world of drag was alive and kicking! From drag balls and drag fashion to new queens emerging, 2014 was bursting at the seams with amazingness!
One exciting event I witnessed was the inaugural "Miss Drag UK" competition. I just knew the UK had so much talent to showcase, and this competition brought the very best out to entertain the nation! It was amazing seeing the talented queens showcase their personalities and skills. Each of them had their own unique and stunning personalities that resonated with audiences nationwide. It was truly a thrilling experience. I found myself captivated by the performances, the humour, the talent, and the joy these amazing artists shared with everyone.
Of course, I also had to indulge in a spot of shopping, my dear. I couldn't leave the world of 2014 without visiting some of the most legendary drag fashion boutiques. These were the ultimate places to source the bold, creative looks that were making waves in the drag scene. You see, dear, I like to keep my eye out for new ideas, especially for those perfect, dazzling, fabulous tutus that might work for my future drag shows! There were so many fantastic fabrics, sequins, and feathers that I couldn't leave empty-handed!
