Pink Tutu Travels: January 2015 - A Drag-tastic Blast From The Past!

Hello, darlings! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu-clad time-travelling blogger, ready to whisk you back in time to January 2015! This month's jaunt, dear readers, takes us right back to the glorious golden age of drag, and believe me, it was a time to remember!

Post #1141 - Pink Tutu's Guide to January 2015!

As I always say, a true drag queen must know her history! It’s what makes us fabulous. So grab a cuppa, settle into your comfy cushions, and let’s dive into this month's slice of drag history together!

Now, I've always said January can be a bit drab - think dreary skies, January sales, and a whole lotta dieting going on! But oh, my dears, that's where the power of pink tutus and drag shows come in. Trust me, there's no better way to kick off the year!

So, buckle up buttercups! My trusty pink tutu carried me back to January 2015. We were lucky to find ourselves in New York City - home to the fabulous Drag Race - where a brand new season of RuPaul's Drag Race was in full swing. We landed with a flourish on the doorstep of the Werk Room. It was a real spectacle. As we flounced through the room, everyone was gagging over our exquisite pink tutu! We did manage to get our photo with Alyssa Edwards, and she gave us a sassy thumbs up! It was an absolute dream, darling!

This season saw some of the most stunning performances I've ever witnessed! Miss Fame, oh my gosh, she looked divine in those elegant looks. Bianca del Rio brought the snarky humour and served fierce looks! It was such a fab season, and my inner fan-girl went absolutely bonkers. I mean, even the iconic Miss Fame called our pink tutu "an absolute vision" and was gushing over our tulle - bless her!

But our adventures in 2015 didn't stop there. Off we went on to Las Vegas, the land of glitter and glamour. Here we witnessed some legendary shows: Jubilee at Bally’s, Le Reve at Wynn, and of course, we had to see Britney Spears at the Planet Hollywood. Oh, the outfits, the energy, the incredible performers – it was simply spectacular! You could feel the electricity in the air, it was so electrifying!

Of course, no trip to Sin City is complete without some glamorous drag, darling! And, wouldn't you know it, the Las Vegas drag scene was roaring. We found ourselves at the Flamingo Las Vegas where we met legendary performers like Sherry Vine and Divine, who just stole the show. Divine's looks, those big wigs, the feather boas, it was so theatrical and over the top - pure magic. The audience were completely captivated. The stage felt alive. They served the iconic moments and it was so captivating to be surrounded by such passion. I'll be keeping a pair of pink fishnets on reserve in case she decides to come back!

We were also blessed with a chance to chat with some other fabulous Drag Race alumni who were enjoying the city too. Now, if you don't know these queens, you simply haven't lived, darling! We managed to find some of these legendary beauties at the Cosmopolitan, and let me tell you, those outfits! Those sequins, the stunning make-up - they absolutely owned it! This iconic queen told me our tutu reminded her of Bianca del Rio's infamous pink "pussycat" look and that I simply had to wear it at the next Drag Race viewing party she was hosting! I'm already plotting a fabulous outfit for it. Pink, obviously, but this time, with some more structure, maybe some pink velvet... I just have to make it werk. She had a real eye for the iconic look, darling!

You know, one thing I always love about drag shows is the sheer sense of community. I really felt a strong sense of solidarity, sisterhood, and creativity - even from across the years. Being surrounded by so many passionate drag queens reminded me that our passion for drag is truly global and universal! We're all a part of this fabulous community - so get ready to celebrate!

So what are the biggest things happening in the world of drag in January 2015? Well, here's what was making headlines, honey!

Big Events:

  • RuPaul's Drag Race continues to reign supreme with a stellar season that is creating new queens. I think it's great that the show continues to put amazing talented drag queens on a world stage and inspire people with fabulous drag performance art! I think it really reflects the change in the world, and drag really plays such a large part in that, the fashion, the beauty and of course, the fun, is what drag is all about! It was fantastic that we got to visit them during such a formative period for them. Drag in the 2010's was coming into its own!
  • The International Drag Queen Festival took place in the Netherlands. This fantastic event features drag queens from all over the globe showcasing their talent, creativity and celebrating everything drag!
  • Drag Wars, which is kind of like the Drag Race of drag kings - it was amazing and we got to see some fabulous performance art, and there were incredible Drag Kings. We had to give our new pink tutu with a cool, studded design, a spin around the stage. And yes, you read that right: our tutu went time-travelling too! I think it deserves all the attention because pink looks incredible on every body!
  • The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrates drag queens from around Australia - and the world. These events really highlight the talent and diversity within the drag community. It is incredible how creative and dedicated all of these drag queens are, even from different countries, they were bringing so much sparkle, sass, and heart!

Who's Hot:

  • RuPaul’s Drag Race stars, including Bianca del Rio and Miss Fame, were gaining a ton of attention - they were, dare I say it - ruling the world. Their work really redefined what it meant to be drag. It wasn't just an artform, it was a fashion show. It was performance art. They inspired thousands with their commitment to their drag, their sense of style and their incredible looks! It really makes you see how far drag has come as an art form.
  • Legendary drag performer Sherry Vine was still putting on some of the most memorable shows ever seen on a drag stage - and trust me darling, they were so much fun! She has a truly captivating way about her and always makes me want to get up and dance - that’s the true magic of drag!
  • Drag king sensation Jackie Beat was hitting the international stage with her stunning show “Jackie Beat: All-American Drag King.” It was truly inspirational - she is such an icon. Drag kings really get me going with their fashion and performances - a great example of how we have expanded drag for new expressions of gender fluidity and drag and beauty!

Hot Trend:

  • Drag Race mania was sweeping the globe with new Drag Race spin offs coming out! Even countries that had very few Drag Queens before were making waves - even we were invited to meet some very up-and-coming drag kings who were inspired by this global community of queens! It shows the truly positive side of the internet and its potential for supporting creatives and growing a global community! We've got some really iconic fashion inspiration, like the bright colours, fabulous wigs, and even, the beautiful, delicate tutu designs. You can tell it was influenced by iconic Drag Race moments and those fabulous, iconic performances by legendary queens. It's fantastic that drag is now able to flourish in every country.

The Pink Tutu Speaks:

So, my dears, it was another wonderful journey into the past with my pink tutu! January 2015 really highlighted the incredible, diverse, and expanding world of drag. From the United States to Australia and all the places in between, drag queens and kings were celebrating their artform and pushing the boundaries. If this trip has proven anything it is that there is more to come for drag queens in the 2010s - more diversity, more acceptance, and a global wave of fabulous outfits! I hope you found this journey just as fabulous as I did. And if you did, don’t forget to tell your friends about us. Follow along at our next trip!

Till next time darlings, and remember, you’re gorgeous. Now go put on a pink tutu, you won’t regret it.

Emma
