Pink-tutu.com Blog Post #1147: July 2015: A Tutu Time Trip to the Heart of Drag!

Hiya darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveller Emma, back with another blast from the past (and hopefully not the future!). Today, my darling divas, we're dipping our toes into the glittering waters of July 2015! It's been a wild ride these past months - you know I always love a good trip down memory lane (and it's surprisingly handy when you can hop between times!). But let's talk drag!

What's on the drag scene?

Well, darling, the world was awash in glitter and sequins back in July 2015, but there was one big thing going on: RuPaul's Drag Race was absolutely owning the US! Season 7 had just wrapped up with Violet Chachki taking the crown - a beautiful, elegant queen with a killer fashion sense, just the way I like 'em! We were all talking about the legendary "Girl Groups" challenge, the fabulous Miss Fame, and that gorgeous final lip sync performance by Pearl and Violet. Let's be honest, they were both serving looks. Sidenote: my drag queen soul is still reeling from the beauty that was Miss Fame's entire runway run. Give me *all the structured beauty! End sidenote.

But darling, it wasn't all about the American queens!

Across the pond, the UK drag scene was bubbling! "Drag Race UK" was just a glimmer in the minds of a few fabulous folk - a glorious day for our nation! Still, in July 2015, drag shows were bursting in London and across the UK! I caught a sensational performance at the "The Royal Vauxhall Tavern", a true haven for drag queens and kings! It was absolutely divine! I was wearing my new lilac tutu and absolutely floored by the fierce talent on display. There were stunning queens serving sickening fashion looks, fierce lip-syncs that made your hair stand on end, and some side-splitting comedy that left me crying tears of laughter! The scene was vibrant, fun, and so inspiring!

On the world stage, we were witnessing the unstoppable force that was RuPaul's Drag Race gaining a global fanbase! You could find fans on social media, in underground clubs, and even on the streets, all sporting drag looks and a shared passion for this unique form of expression.

What about my time travels?

As a queen of the pink tutu, darling, July 2015 allowed me to delve into some of my absolute favourite things! Firstly, darling, the fashion scene in London was thriving! Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood - they were both having huge fashion moments and I had to experience it first hand! It felt like stepping onto the stage of a fantastical fashion show! It's a dream to be able to see all these incredible outfits and styles – they're so inspiring! But my mission was pink! So naturally, I landed smack-bang in the middle of a street style event and it was...well...pinktacular! From sugary candy-coloured coats to floral print skirts that made your heart flutter - it was a rainbow of fabulousness! Even the most stoic gentleman was rocking a bright pink lapel! But my eye was caught by the vibrant street artists who had transformed the town with bold strokes of pinks and lilacs on concrete canvas! This really confirmed what I already know, darling: pink is the way forward.

And since I couldn’t get enough of all the wonderful ballet looks, darling, I decided to spend some time in Paris at the Paris Opera Ballet! Can you believe this magical space? My Tutu landed right outside this magnificent place and as I wandered through those gilded doors, it was like stepping into a fairytale! Imagine, darling, the costumes, the artistry, and the grace...it was breathtaking! Seeing all the incredible dancers move like angels just ignited my passion for dancing - so obviously, I busted out my own moves in the rehearsal hall. Thankfully no one noticed the odd 2023 ballerina dancing among the graceful, elegant Parisians. A real time-travelling fashion blunder if you ask me, but darling, I'm sure we all make mistakes when we're enjoying ourselves.

Where do we go from here?

Darling, July 2015 gave me such a glorious dose of everything I adore about life - the incredible world of drag, the stunning beauty of ballet and the joyful freedom of exploring all those colourful fashions! Now, my darling divas, it's your turn! Get your tutus, grab your sparkle, and go explore the amazing world of drag! Don't forget to share your stories with me, too! Let's turn the world pink, one sparkly, dazzling, Tutu-filled step at a time! Until next time! xoxo
