Hey darlings, Emma here! Your resident tutu-wearing time-traveler, ready to whisk you back to the glittery, fabulous, and oh-so-stylish year of 2015. This month's journey, like all the rest, is all about celebrating the glorious history of drag. And what a journey it was in 2015! Buckle up, girlies, this post is a hot mess of fabulousness.
You know, it's funny, I've been thinking about all the amazing drag moments from 2015 and I realised: it was a year that saw drag exploding out of the underground scene and into the mainstream like a fabulous supernova. From the incredible RuPaul's Drag Race season seven to the groundbreaking performance of Conchita Wurst at Eurovision, it was truly a glorious year to be a drag fan.
And that brings me to my first stop - the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria, May 23, 2015. This wasn't just any Eurovision; it was the year the beautiful Conchita Wurst slayed the competition, rocking her trademark beard and sparkling gowns. This performance wasn't just about a catchy song, it was a symbol of acceptance, of diversity, and of what true drag power can achieve. The power of a sparkly beard, you might say! Conchita, you are a true inspiration.
But let's face it, Eurovision is just the tip of the glamorous iceberg. 2015 was a whirlwind of amazing drag, and you just had to be there to truly feel the magic! And, with my magical pink tutu, I was. My time-travel plans included some truly remarkable performances and events.
Let's talk drag queens, specifically RuPaul's Drag Race, season seven. That season, with its iconic moments and memorable queens, like Violet Chachki, Pearl, and Ginger Minj, set the stage for some truly epic drag artistry. Remember "Snatch Game"? Remember Ginger's iconic "I have not felt this loved!" I had front row seats (in a matching pink tutu, naturally) for this incredible journey of creative genius, fashion, and, let's face it, a little bit of sass!
This time travel trip also saw me indulging in some seriously incredible shopping, of course. You simply can't talk about 2015 drag without mentioning the ever-growing fashion trends that took the scene by storm. This year saw a resurgence of bold colors, glitter galore, and of course, the quintessential tutu (always in pink, you know). The iconic House of Edwards, founded by the magnificent Miss Fame, became a drag fashion icon, offering dramatic, theatrical looks that resonated with fans and inspired new generations of queens.
However, drag was not just confined to stages and runways in 2015. Drag was hitting the streets and changing the landscape of fashion. In Derbyshire, I felt this buzz so clearly. Drag queens like my dearest friend Trixie Mattel were changing the game, blurring the lines between performance art and everyday life.
Did I tell you I got to meet Trixie at her gig at the local queer pub, the "Dusty Bin"?! You know I always love to support local drag queens! We even chatted about my time-traveling pink tutu, and let me tell you, she was pretty impressed!
Of course, a journey through the glorious world of drag isn't complete without talking about the legends who shaped it. This year, the fabulous Bianca Del Rio was reigning supreme. Not only was she the iconic winner of RuPaul's Drag Race season six, but she continued to break barriers with her hilarious wit and sharp fashion sense. Let's be honest, you couldn't escape the Bianca Del Rio hype in 2015! It's worth mentioning that Bianca wasn't alone; the queen was in good company with other stars like Alyssa Edwards and Courtney Act, who also graced our television screens and ignited the world with their powerful performances.
Oh, and speaking of queens who deserve all the praise, the incredible Miss Fame absolutely stole the show this year. Not only was her work on Drag Race sensational, but she also launched her makeup line, proving that drag queens can be powerful businesswomen too. She also brought an impeccable sense of high fashion, glamour, and grace to drag.
So, there you have it, darlings! A glimpse into the incredible year that was 2015 in the world of drag. A year where queens reigned supreme, audiences embraced diversity, and a pink tutu became the ultimate symbol of fashion, individuality, and above all, self-expression.
So, get out there and embrace the fabulousness! Strut your stuff, flaunt your style, and always, always remember to embrace the pink. You know, it's my mission in life - I want everyone rocking a pink tutu, whether they're at a drag show, walking down the street, or even travelling through time!
I hope you enjoyed this month's trip through time! Don't forget to catch me next month for a new blast from the drag queen past. You're gonna want to grab your pink tutus, darlings, because we're taking you back to a truly iconic year! Until then, keep on shining, stay fierce, and always, always embrace the power of pink!
Lots of love,
Emma
