Pink Tutu Time Travel: May 2016 - A Night in Drag History

Darling, you won't believe where my pink tutu has taken me this month! This is Emma from www.pink-tutu.com, and this is my 1157th blog post. It's the end of May, and darling, the world of drag was absolutely popping! And no, I wasn't at Glastonbury... this month, my time-travelling tutu has brought me to a whirlwind tour of drag history, starting with a fabulous day in New York City!

Now, darling, I have to say, this pink tutu of mine really has a mind of its own, and this trip has been full of surprises. But first, let’s talk fashion.

Pink Tutu Inspiration

Have you ever wondered where all the tutus came from? Now, I’m sure we can all agree there’s something absolutely iconic about a tulle, swishy, fabulous pink tutu - it's so chic, and I live for that big poof of pink goodness! So, imagine my surprise when I found myself at the Met Gala, held on May 2nd, 2016! Honestly, darlings, it was an explosion of glitter, sequins, and fabulousness. My personal favourite? Kendall Jenner's shimmering, emerald green dress.

And talking about that poof of fabulousness, remember that fabulous pink feathered skirt Rihanna wore to the 2015 Met Gala? Yes, I’m talking about THAT pink poof of feather and glitter magic! This was such a stunning design, a nod to classic vintage ballet dresses. Who needs a tutu when you’ve got Rihanna’s incredible poof of pink glory? And talking of feather poofs… darling, did you see those giant feathered hats on the streets? Fabulous, darling! So 1980s and absolutely iconic! And oh darling, let’s not forget those incredible ruffled gowns! The sheer glamour of it all, truly a scene straight from a fashion magazine!

Catching Up with Drag Royalty

Then, in the blink of an eye, I found myself at a historic drag performance in NYC! You see, May is such a crucial month for drag history, because this is where it all started. The Stonewall Riots, you see, took place on the 28th June, and the bravery of those amazing people at the Stonewall Inn set off a revolution that changed the face of the world for LGBTQ+ people. It truly is the backbone of what drag is all about. And if you didn’t already know, that revolutionary act sparked the fight for rights for drag queens all over the world. Honestly, darling, the stories of these brave souls are what truly make drag such an important part of our culture!

World-Wide Drag Scenes: An Amazing Explosion of Glitter

This time-traveling pink tutu is a wild one, I’m telling you! But anyway, as I’m always saying, the best thing about drag is its reach - we are one global community with some fabulous connections! From NYC to London to Australia, there's always an explosion of sequins and lip-syncs, and darling, I wouldn't have it any other way!

Let’s check out what’s going on, darling:

  • The Drag Race Season 8 Finale (May 9, 2016): I’ve gotta tell you, watching the eighth season of ā€œRuPaul’s Drag Raceā€ was an absolute dream. That fabulous reunion episode! You've got to hand it to RuPaul for keeping us entertained and always putting on a show to remember.

  • *Queen for a Day, The Movie: * I loved watching this, too! The show's first movie was such a fun romp about the history of drag queens! From burlesque, vaudeville, and everything in-between, it showcased how the genre was more than just a few fancy costumes and makeup.

  • *Manchester's Drag Scene: * And look, let's not forget the iconic Northern England drag scene. In May 2016, it was popping with incredible acts all across Manchester, all ready to shake it off and bring the glamour! It was full of young talent, with amazing singers and performers, pushing the boundaries of creativity, daring to be different, and making the stage absolutely sparkle! Manchester, you’ve really got it going on!

Every time my time-travelling tutu takes me to a new place, a new decade, it reminds me why this lifestyle, this community, this love for expression, means everything to me.
