Pink-Tutu.com: #DragQueenHistory - Post #1202 - February 2020 - Oh Honey, What a Drag!

Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here with another scintillating entry in my fabulous #DragQueenHistory blog! Today's post takes us back to February 2020, a time that, for some of us, feels like a lifetime ago.

You wouldn't believe what I discovered this month! This time, my fabulous pink tutu spun me all the way to the 1960s in New York City. Oh honey, what a glamorous era for drag!

Now, we all know drag is an art form with a rich and diverse history, but back in the '60s, the scene was bursting with so much raw talent! Imagine stepping into a bar, seeing a fabulous performer decked out in an impossibly high bouffant and a showstopping sequined dress, lip-syncing to the latest Motown tunes. I mean, just picture the glamour!

I found myself standing in the audience at a show featuring the iconic Jackie Curtis, an artist who truly pushed the boundaries of drag! Now, if you're looking for a legendary pioneer, look no further. Jackie was a singer, an actress, and a true performance artist - a veritable whirlwind of theatrical brilliance! Their work was so edgy, so avant-garde - it really did make you sit up and say, β€œoh honey, I need to know more!”

Speaking of legends, can we just take a moment to remember the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers? Now, these guys were pioneers of the "cartoon drag" style, using costumes and makeup to push the boundaries of gender representation. They might not have been performing live in 2020, but their influence on the drag scene of today is undeniable! Just ask RuPaul - even he'll tell you the Furry Freak Brothers played a vital role in paving the way for what drag has become today!

But it wasn't all about iconic personalities! February 2020 saw a vibrant drag scene all across the world. In San Francisco, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were getting ready for another hilarious fundraiser - oh, what I'd give to be there, soaking up the divine silliness!

And while drag shows were popping up all over the US, the UK was seeing a burgeoning queer nightlife scene too. Imagine my delight! The legendary Gosh nightclub in London, known for its camp performances and electrifying dance floor, was absolutely buzzing with energy. Drag was evolving, with an array of styles, from the glittery extravaganza to the subversive and challenging.

As I time travelled back to my own time, my mind was spinning with inspiration. Seeing the early days of drag performance made me appreciate the art form even more! The pioneers of the past, with their fearless attitude and unwavering commitment to artistry, are the true stars. They laid the foundations for the thriving global drag scene we see today.

P.S. I absolutely adored the looks I saw during my travels to February 2020! Here are a few of my faves:

  • The iconic drag queen, Divine, who graced us with a beautiful tulle dress and a showstopping wig in her own particular style of elegance.

  • The Furry Freak Brothers gave me serious fashion goals, mixing cartoon-inspired makeup with colorful, flamboyant costumes.

  • The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, with their signature habit and playful attitude, were definitely channeling some high-end camp.

My dear followers, it's important to always remember, whether we’re talking 1960s NYC or 2020 San Francisco, that drag has always been about pushing boundaries, defying expectations, and, above all, celebrating our fabulous selves. It's a powerful force for creativity, expression, and joy - a shining beacon in a world that needs a touch of glitter.

Remember, darlings, it's never too late to explore your own inner queen! Stay sparkly, and don't forget to twirl!
