Pink Tutu Travels: A Drag Queen's Journey Through Time!

Post Number: 1201

Hello lovelies! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another peek into the glittering history of drag! This month, I've been twirling through time and landed right smack-dab in the middle of January 2020! Let's put on our most fabulous sequined shoes and travel back, shall we?

Pink-Tutu Diaries: January 2020

The world was a very different place then, lovelies! We were all blissfully unaware of the pandemic that was just around the corner, and everyone was out and about, ready to paint the town pink! Well, maybe not everyone, but you know what I mean!

The World of Drag: A Sparkling Mosaic

The drag scene was thriving back then, my darlings. In London, the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern was still pumping out the best shows, while the G-A-Y club was always buzzing with energy. Across the pond in New York City, The Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, was still serving up iconic performances. Drag queens around the world were showcasing their talents in a variety of ways, from theatre productions like "RuPaul's Drag Race" and the absolutely gorgeous "Kinky Boots" to street performances and glamorous nightclub acts.

My Pink Tutu Takes Me on a World Tour

As usual, my pink tutu took me on an exciting adventure! First, I zipped off to Paris, darling, where the drag scene was, as always, absolutely chic! The Parisian drag queens were the picture of elegance and grace. I watched a show at a quaint little theatre, where the queens transformed themselves into stunning versions of the world's most famous ballet dancers. It was simply divine!

From there, my time-travelling tutu carried me all the way to Tokyo! Imagine my delight when I discovered that Japan's drag scene was unlike anything I'd ever experienced! Drag kings, with their impeccably sharp suits and incredible talent for lip-syncing, held court at vibrant clubs and events. It was an absolute revelation, darling!

Back in England, I decided to pay a visit to my hometown, Derby. Yes, believe it or not, even the charming city of Derby has a bustling drag scene! I stopped by the Old Vic, the historic theatre that I had loved ever since I was a little girl. The energy in that old theatre was incredible! The show featured a local drag queen who had been inspired by the early days of drag in Derbyshire.

The Importance of Keeping Drag History Alive

So, here's the thing, darlings. Drag history is vital! It’s the history of our community, our traditions, our struggles, and our triumphs. It’s important for us to learn about the past and celebrate the progress we’ve made. It’s also crucial for us to recognise the challenges that remain and to work together to ensure that the drag scene continues to thrive and grow in a world where everyone can embrace their own personal expression.

Let's Get Back to Fashion

While the drag world was in full swing, what was the world of fashion up to back in January 2020? Well, darling, I saw everything from sparkling sequin gowns to dramatic feathered hats, and showstopping heels that could rival a showgirl's dreams. The street style was also inspiring! People were wearing all kinds of colours and patterns, experimenting with different textures and silhouettes. But you know, when you think about it, that was always a big part of drag fashion, right?

Finding My Pink Tutu Tribe

January 2020 might have been before the pandemic changed the world as we know it, but that's no reason not to think back on the joyous energy of the time. As for me, my dear readers, I'm already busy planning my next trip. Maybe next month's adventures will take me to the 1980s - imagine the shoulder pads and the neon! You'll find me, as always, at the www.pink-tutu.com website! In the meantime, keep on shining, darlings!

With all my love, and a little sprinkle of pink glitter!

Emma

P.S. I'm starting a new initiative called " Pink Tutu Project". It's all about spreading the love and joy of drag to everyone. If you're thinking of giving drag a go, don't be afraid to experiment! Find a tutu that makes you feel powerful, fabulous, and fierce. We're all about acceptance, expression, and community, darling!
