Hello darlings! It's your favourite Derbyshire drag queen time-traveller, Emma, and I'm back for another dazzling trip into #DragQueenHistory, straight from the depths of my magical pink tutu! It's May 2020, my dears, and honestly, the world was feeling a bit like a messy boudoir. I've got to say, I felt a little apprehensive about the whole situation! Not that this glamorous gal is scared of anything, you know! Itās simply that you canāt time travel without a little shimmer and shine, even through a pandemic! But worry not, darlings, because, with a flick of my feather boa and a sprinkle of glitter, Iām going to be right in the thick of it all, bringing you the latest news and goss!
Speaking of news, it was quite a rollercoaster ride for the world of drag back then, what with everyone hunkering down in their little, tiny flats! Honestly, darling, you'd have thought everyone had been turned into a Barbie doll and shipped off to some glamourous miniature home! It was all very #StayHomeandWerk, my lovelies, and drag queens found creative ways to share their amazing talents with the world, without the full experience of live performances!
But the most important news? The fabulousness continued! I felt it myself as I sashayed through time, and that's what #DragQueenHistory is all about, isnāt it? Sharing the inspiring spirit of drag queens, whatever the world throws at them!
So grab your tiaras, your blusher, and your fanciest feather boa, and let's take a dive into the whirlwind that was May 2020. Letās make some fabulous history!
The Rise of Digital Drag!
Honestly, my dears, you should have seen the incredible energy happening online! Social media was bursting with #DragQueen content, and that's a good thing, don't you think? Even if you couldnāt get out to see a drag show, the spirit of drag was alive and kicking in the digital world, making everything a whole lot brighter!
From the glitz of RuPaulās Drag Race, bringing a bit of glitter and joy into living rooms everywhere, to independent drag artists taking to social media to showcase their incredible talent, the world of digital drag was blooming like a whole field of hydrangeas! The online drag scene had gone from āoh my god, this is incredibleā, to ācan I just stay here in this fabulous, shimmering, sparkly, perfect little virtual world?ā There was simply no better place to be, especially for those who longed for a glamorous escape.
And let's not forget the iconic queens joining the online movement. The big-name girls were rocking digital content in a big way, creating entertaining live streams, digital showcases and interactive online performances that truly pushed boundaries, while reminding everyone how essential the community aspect of drag really is!
But The Show Must Go On!
Yes, darling, even with all the world thrown at them, the queens continued to shine brightly, adapting to the new reality in truly extraordinary ways. They found innovative solutions for showcasing their creativity: they went online, creating online performances and showcasing their incredible talent for the world to see. It was #DragQuarantine and the fabulous world of drag was thriving, proving its undeniable resilience in the face of change, just like a stunningly glamorous Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Some drag queens went even further and organised their own online events, combining virtual performances with charity fundraising, spreading joy while raising money for those affected by the pandemic. It was beautiful! A shining example of dragās enduring capacity for both entertaining and giving back to the community. These queens didn't just entertain, darling, they helped people!
Looking Back and Forward:
Honestly, my dears, this was such an important time in the history of drag! The way drag queens rallied together to keep the flame alive and inspire a worldwide community? It was, simply put, inspirational. The ability to adapt and create new, innovative ways of sharing the fabulous spirit of drag is truly remarkable, darling, proving that even in times of uncertainty, drag shines bright. You simply canāt stop the dazzling, sparkling spirit of drag.
And just like this little ballerina, I'll be here to share my time travel stories, with all my dears. So tune in every month to www.pink-tutu.com, where the sparkle of #DragQueenHistory awaits. And if you'd like to see a drag performance thatāll make you feel like you've been dipped in a bath of pure glitter and excitement, book a ticket to see me on stage soon! Don't forget your pink tutus! See you next month, darlings!
Love, Emma xx
