Hello my darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling queen, Emma, back with another dazzling dive into drag history! As you all know, every month, I shimmy my way into the annals of time in my magical pink tutu, and let me tell you, January 2021 was a shocking delight! I don't mean to get all dramatic, darling, but prepare to have your wig snatched - because even in 2021, things were already fierce!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Emma, why the heck would you even think about leaving the glamour of 2023?" Darling, this journey isn't just about glitz and glam, it's about tracing the origins of everything we adore, those fabulous roots that make drag what it is today.
But let me not bore you with the grand schemes of time travel - let's jump straight to the tea, shall we? I waltzed back to a time when the world of drag was buzzing with anticipation. Remember RuPaul's Drag Race, Season 13? That was just about to drop! It's unbelievable to think how far it's come. There was so much hype surrounding those queen's entrance into the world of RuPaul, and those were some amazing queens! Remember Kandy Muse, RosΓ©, and Gottmik? I had to pinch myself! Even in my fabulous, magical tutu, I was like, "This is the future!".
The UK, oh, the UK, you fabulous Brits, were experiencing a massive drag surge. That whole "Drag Race UK" hype? Unreal. The show hadn't even aired yet! There was already a huge buzz about queens like Tayce, Bimini, and Divina De Campo - and it was only just beginning! Now we get to see Drag Race UK every year - I swear, it was only three years ago! It all felt so brand new.
As for the USA, oh darling, everything was so shiny! That fresh new season of Drag Race - it had all of us twirling around our own homes with anticipation. But that was the tip of the iceberg! New York City had been living its best drag life. There were so many talented queens working their way into the public eye, like the fierce Peppermint! She had just graced us all with her grace on the iconic "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 9 and oh, darling, the impact! I just knew she was destined for huge things. I just knew!
But remember, darling, it wasn't just about the big things! There were so many incredible queens and groups bursting with talent! Like, I saw an absolutely stunning group called House of Aaliyah in California. The makeup! The creativity! It was breathtaking! And, dear God, the hair! They just brought a whole new definition to fabulousness! I couldn't help but join the crowd screaming, "Werk, queens, werk!".
Then there was a performance by Gaga. I know, I know, it feels like another lifetime ago, but this Drag Queen was about to set the internet on fire, she was set to go on her Chromatica Ball Tour. Talk about talent.
Don't get me wrong, though, darling! This was about more than just RuPaul, though, we all *adore RuPaul. It was about a massive global wave of *acceptance. The #DragQueenHistory hashtag was beginning to be all the rage! You know I had to get involved - even a pink tutu could see that we were all going to need a way to remember how it all happened. So, let's give it up for drag artists across the world who were fighting to get on the map and be celebrated.
To be fair, I don't know about you darlings, but this made my heart soar with happiness! Here I was, dancing around a drag show from January 2021 in a glittery pink tutu. A tutu that could magically make you see a queen everywhere you looked! And I knew I had to spread the word - to help everyone see the magic of drag!
Oh, darlings, the more I think about that first dance in 2021, the more I remember how lucky we are to be in a time when the world embraces our fabulosity. The fact that anyone with an ounce of confidence could step onto a stage - that, to me, is what makes drag so magical.
Remember this, my lovely queens and kings: No matter where you are or what your drag name is - every one of us is contributing to the incredible story of drag. From the small-town drag bars to the massive international stages, we all add our glittery, fabulous touch to #DragQueenHistory!
So keep on werk-ing, keep on dancing, and most importantly, keep on wearing those fabulous pink tutus!
