Hello darlings! Your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller is back, ready to whisk you away on a journey through drag history! It's your girl Emma here, back for another fabulous monthly jaunt. Today, we're going back to May 2021, where I stumbled across some incredible, iconic, and truly inspiring drag happenings! It was a truly whimsical and tantalising month in drag history.
As ever, I’m always eager to get my dancing shoes on and journey back through the timeline in my enchanted pink tutu, travelling back to moments in time that sparked magic in the drag community.
A Pink Tutu Pilgrimage To the Past
This month, my time travel took me right into the heart of the New York City drag scene. Oh, the vibrant energy of that era! And May 2021 was especially buzzing! I waltzed through the streets, my pink tulle swishing as I absorbed all the glitter and glamour.
The atmosphere was electrifying! Everywhere you looked, drag queens were working their magic - at street performances, in glittering clubs, and on stages in every nook and cranny. You can't tell me that May 2021 wasn't a landmark month in drag history - just imagine the joy and the fierce fashion, the powerful statements, the bold colours and sassy styles, and all those phenomenal performances.
A Drag Icon: Peppermint - 2021!
This month was filled with a joyous sense of celebration, particularly the momentous news of Peppermint, a stunning drag legend and an icon from the iconic Season 9 of "RuPaul's Drag Race", becoming the first drag queen to play the lead on Broadway in "Head Over Heels"! I was so inspired to witness this, and it felt like the drag universe was coming full circle with Peppermint taking this huge leap into mainstream entertainment. Just amazing, just inspiring! Her impact is truly groundbreaking, it was definitely a "Head Over Heels" moment for all of us in the drag world.
The 'Legendary' World of 'Legendary'
2021 was a glorious year, bursting with legendary Drag Races - from RuPaul's Drag Race, of course, to a thrilling new spin on the whole shebang! The new ballroom show "Legendary" dropped on HBO Max in May 2021. A huge wave of energy poured through the ballroom scene with “Legendary”. Imagine all the glam of "RuPaul’s Drag Race” mixed with the iconic spirit and fierce fierceness of the Ballroom scene!
“Legendary” had a brilliant group of ballrooms taking center stage, each one dripping in unique fashion, makeup and a sassy confidence that literally set the ballroom alight.
And those looks? Oh. My. Goodness! You know, as a ballerina queen, I was totally transported into another dimension by those mind-blowing ball looks, showcasing all that incredible fashion history - it was truly an experience for the senses, an extravaganza of glitz and glamour.
A Night Out With The Glam Squad
It would be impossible to travel to a moment in time in my pink tutu and not enjoy a drag show, would it? And I have to tell you, darlings, I went on an incredible journey through May 2021.
I stepped into the vibrant scene, surrounded by a dazzling rainbow of drag queens! From a sassy night out with the iconic Miss Fame to watching legendary moments of fierce dance, song, and laughter from queens like Peppermint and Aquaria, to catching the most flamboyant and captivating show at the renowned Stonewall Inn - the magic of the NYC drag scene is unlike anything else in the world!
Keeping it Local in My Derbyshire Drag Home
Oh, and I never forget about the beautiful and thriving drag scenes closer to my home here in Derbyshire. It wouldn't be fair if I did, so I'm always looking back to the history and inspiration of the local scene that's made me, well, me!
And speaking of which, May 2021 saw a truly special event that made me swell with pride: the legendary “Derbyshire Drag Extravaganza”, a magnificent event featuring Derbyshire drag talent of all ages! Such an explosion of creativity - truly a testament to how far the art of drag has come. It’s a joy to be part of such a dynamic, growing, and vibrant scene.
Get Dressed in Your Pink Tutu!
