Welcome back, my loves, to Pink-Tutu's Time Travels! It's your girl Emma, back with another sizzling monthly update from my time-travelling exploits. It’s a total blast, darling, I’m telling you! It’s hard to believe I’m on my 1218th blog post, I can hardly contain my excitement - that’s just over ten years worth of fabulousness! June 2021? We're going on a whirlwind journey of glamorous drag, darling, a kaleidoscope of colours and sass!
So grab your fanciest fan, darling, pour yourselves a delicious gin and tonic (or two), and let’s take a dive into the incredible world of drag history, June 2021 style!
June 2021: A Time of Change and Drag EvolutionI arrived in June 2021, the pink tutu whirring around me as the world around me shifted and blurred. As I looked around, there was a freshness to the air, almost as if the world was on the cusp of something fantastic! Oh my darling, did it ever deliver!
The energy of the scene was vibrant, like the flashing disco ball of a supercharged club. I’m not sure if it’s the time travel or just my fierce sense of fashion, but everyone seemed captivated by the power of pink. A definite good omen for my life’s goal, to see everyone in a pink tutu!
A Global Tour of Drag in June 2021As my trusty time travelling pink tutu swirled me to exciting new places around the globe, I got a real feel for the direction of the drag world in June 2021, it was a thrilling mix of theatre, nightlife, television, and social media It was a time of revolution and expansion and oh-so-much glam!
London, my hometown was, naturally, buzzing! I popped into The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. You’d think I'd be tired of it, having seen it through the decades, but every time I step in that venerated, magical space, I feel that raw drag energy! It’s almost palpable! And, June 2021 was no different. The queerness just oozed out of every corner - you could feel the community's pulse.
Of course, I had to catch the legendary "RuPaul’s Drag Race UK" Season 2 while I was there! It was, in a word, phenomenal, I gasped, I cheered, and I spilled my drinks, oh-honey! Drag race, is so very popular right now and rightfully so. It brings to the masses drag's true art form and shines a light on so many incredibly talented artists. But it's more than that; it's an opportunity for acceptance, visibility, and inclusion.
But my darlings, it's not just the big shows that have that raw power, the smaller, local drag nights had a sense of togetherness, a real shared energy that's just magic. It felt like an escape from reality and oh, it needed to be in our lives at this point! I caught a phenomenal performance by a new up-and-coming star at the Queer Night Club in Bristol – just a stone's throw from where I grew up. There’s always talent everywhere in this incredible community.
The drag scene in New York City, of course, had a fierce vibe! From the legendary drag brunch at Industry to the jaw-dropping, always fabulous "The Drag Brunch" at the Park Hyatt – my, how these shows were thriving.
And I'll tell you a little secret... The drag ball scene was popping like crazy! These nights gave an exciting, fresh glimpse into what was new and what was trending. The drag ball culture has come a long way, darling! In the sixties, it felt revolutionary, in June 2021, it just felt epic!
Drag is a truly global phenomenon and my travels proved it. From the Tokyo’s “Club Bar-B-Q”, to a small town in Peru – the love for drag was spreading. It was incredible, darling. You know what? We could see it was all about connection and belonging - a sense of kinship amongst fellow queens!
Fashion in the World of June 2021Darling, I had to dive straight into some retail therapy after my whirlwind adventures. You'll never guess what, a tutu was never out of fashion. The world was full of fashion, it seemed there was an explosion of new ways to make statements!
From the street style stars rocking out in extravagant, theatrical looks to the runways awash in vibrant colors and glitter – it was all about individuality and taking risks!
Let’s talk fashion – my favorite subject, obviously! A neon explosion of color and shape, oh it just spoke to my soul! Everything was so unapologetically glam. Even street wear had a dash of drag queen flair. I’ve got my eyes on these chunky trainers with a sassy pink sparkle… It’s all about embracing those bold statements, those powerful choices.
There were, of course, those glorious couture creations that were truly dazzling, but my, I can't leave out my all time favorite drag trend– the tutu! Yes, a good ol' fashion tulle masterpiece - it just gets me every time!
A Drag Icon's Legacy Lives OnThere’s a new breed of Drag Queens, fierce and confident. There are those that aspire to follow in the footsteps of some truly great queens who walked the earth in June 2021. But it was the icons from earlier decades, like the Divine and Divine, that had this sense of pushing boundaries that truly resonated in June 2021.
Of course, in June 2021 we saw new queens rising to fame in a way they never have before! It was like drag was having its big moment – and thank goodness for it. This gave hope for the next generation of drag artists - and it definitely gives this time-travelling drag queen hope. There was this feeling that drag is finally making its place in mainstream society.
It wasn't all glitz and glamour, there were so many serious things that faced drag. There were issues about representation and inclusivity; things that we're still trying to overcome. But we had made so much progress!
A Look Ahead: Pink Tutus for Everyone!And there you have it – June 2021. What a thrilling trip! A decade gone, and yet the spirit of drag is so powerful. We are here, we are proud, and we are a force of nature!
One day, I’ll achieve my dream of every creature sporting a pink tutu! It is my ambition to make it a fashion icon, a beacon of pure joy! And I think we’re closer than ever. We are creating our own space, our own beauty, our own happiness. This time journey, like all the others, showed me the undeniable strength, the resilience, and the endless possibilities within drag - it just fills my heart with pure, pink joy!
My time in the pink tutu will always be an adventure. We'll be meeting up next month, darlings! Don’t you worry.
