Welcome back to another glamorous jaunt through the annals of Drag Queen History! It's your favourite Derbyshire diva, Emma, coming at you live fromâŠwell, wherever my fabulous pink tutu takes me! Today, we're spinning through time to celebrate a day brimming with vibrant colours and shimmering sparkles â May 5th! Buckle up, sugar-plums, because this is going to be a positively splendid adventure.
Remember my dream? The pink tutu revolution? We're making progress, my dears! With every time travel escapade, the pink tutu gets another inch closer to taking over the world â starting with our fabulous drag queens!
And honestly, what better way to spread the message than with a trip back to⊠wait for it⊠1874!
Now, I know what youâre thinking â tutus in 1874? Oh, honey, trust me, it gets deliciously camp! This was a time when ladies loved their frothy frills and dramatic flourishes â basically the aesthetic foundation for all good drag, donât you think? Imagine if those corseted, lace-trimmed petticoats were given a vibrant, twirling upgrade. Now thatâs the kind of sartorial explosion worthy of a grand soirĂ©e.
And, speaking of grand soirees, on this particular May 5th, a dazzling theatrical affair took place in London's esteemed Drury Lane Theatre â a real haven for drama, musical mayhem, and of course, costume mayhem! Think grand staircases, chandeliers glittering with stolen starlight, and a veritable army of performers sporting feathered hats, billowing sleeves, and perhaps⊠gasp⊠the very first spark of what we would call a âtutuâ?! Imagine those frilled skirts on the female chorus lines given an extra twirl, some feathers, a dash of sheer audacity, and â BAM! - you've got yourself a pre-cursor to the glorious drag tutu we all know and love!
Imagine being there, in that incredible Victorian haze of glamour and wonder! My darlings, itâs giving âdrag icon waiting to happenâ â and the best part? The show wasnât even a drag performance â it was Hamlet, of all things! But imagine the drag queens of the era - the ones hiding in plain sight, the ones channeling those onstage gowns, making them their own, putting their own cheeky flair onto that historical fabric â I dare you to tell me those queens werenât the true stars of the show!
But while the Londoners were steeped in Hamlet, letâs journey across the pond, across the Atlantic and arrive in⊠New York!
Oh, New York in 1874, with your charming cobblestone streets and hidden saloons â what a fantastic spot for a drag history hunt! While I havenât found any evidence of drag performances in the big apple just yet, Iâm sure, darlings, with enough glitter, sequins and a touch of that iconic NYC grit â weâll uncover a little history there soon!
I'm feeling so inspired after this journey, I'm already planning my next adventure in time! But, before we time travel again, it's time to delve into the world of contemporary drag, where every day is a pink tutu party!

The divine Miss Peppermint with her soulful singing and powerful performances? Breathtaking! And darling, the legendary Miss Bianca Del Rio's comedy tours are just hilarious!
