April, eh? The month of springtime, Easter eggs, and... well, frankly, for me, the month of tutus, darling! (It's always tutu time, let's be real). This month, we're heading back to April 2022 to explore the wild, wonderful, and fabulous world of drag, just like the pink-tutu clad ballerina that I am!
Let's get those sequins swirling and get ready for a time travel odyssey! 💃💫
2022, the year the world finally saw the light, right?! I mean, at least as far as my drag wardrobe was concerned. You know me, dolls, a true pink-tutu aficionado! Back then, everyone was obsessed with RuPaul's Drag Race. The show had gone global, darlings! We had all those fantastic seasons - UK vs the World, the Down Under version, and let's not forget Canada! Oh my god, the queens were serving looks!
Remember when Jorgeous, that absolute stunner, won Season 14?! Her runway looks were out of this world. And then we had *Kerri Colby who could serve both glamour and heart-wrenching storytelling in one fierce package! But let’s be real, those amazing Snatch Game performances… *squeals It's all a blur of camp, drama, and fierce lip-syncing!
Oh, and how can I forget my personal favs, Mo Heart and Maddy Morphosis? Both bringing it on the runway with that pink vibe - a touch of Mo’s fierce fierceness mixed with Maddy’s camp and beauty and we have a a true tutu dream combo, doll! 💖
Speaking of the drag world back in 2022, remember all those legends who graced the world with their performances?! Oh, let me tell you about my April 2022 time travel journey…
It started in the bustling streets of New York City, where I landed, twirling, of course, at the Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. Snatches wig. The atmosphere was electric! ⚡✨
And then I saw Lady Bunny! Screams internally. Oh, to be whisked away to her world of sassy jokes, sharp wit, and absolute, unwavering fabulousness! She is truly one of the queens who shaped modern drag! Then, just a hop skip and a twirl away, I found myself at the iconic Drag Brunch at The Duplex, a haven for New York’s fabulous drag queens. My god, it was chaotic, and I loved it! And Sherry Vine was the host! Talk about a true icon. Her hilarious, sarcastic brand of comedy is one-of-a-kind! I left with my cheeks aching from all the laughter, doll.
But then, my time-traveling tutu whisked me off to a more sophisticated, more refined destination. I landed, quite literally, on a fluffy cloud, amidst a whirlwind of glitter and feather boas in the West End Theatre District, London. Wipes off fake tears. Oh darling, how can you not fall in love with the elegance of London drag? It's the glamour of it all! And those voices, divine! It’s so chic!
As I glided through the West End, it was the magic hour, with the sunlight casting its magic spell across The Dominion Theatre, the stage for Drag Queen Christmas, starring a dazzling ensemble cast! But the most stunning thing? A glorious show by the iconic Divine. Oh darling, her charisma, the camp, the sass! The absolute legend herself! The way she moved the crowd, she had the whole audience mesmerized, transported to a world of pure drag magic. ✨
But before we forget, it wasn’t just American Drag Race that captured hearts that month! UK Drag Race was taking the world by storm, as The Vivienne, that Queen of Hearts, was crowned the winner! Her fierceness on the runway was unreal. She truly captured the spirit of UK drag. Oh, how I remember her fierce lipsyncs against the queen, who stole the show?! 🤫 Oh darlings, you just had to be there!*
Speaking of UK queens, I can’t forget our other drag icons. We're talking the legendary, sassy and simply divine The Lady Boys of Bangkok. Remember those incredible shows that travelled the world back in 2022? The costumes! The spectacle!
Of course, the most important thing about any show, as I’m sure you know, is the music! Back in 2022, we were blessed with the sounds of Doja Cat – pure magic! And I think every drag queen was playing it! And who could forget Beyoncé! That fierce Renaissance vibe... Oh, darling, it was electric. And don’t forget the Queen of Pop herself – Madonna, who brought out the circus with her Madame X tour, always pushing the boundaries of performance! We couldn’t be living without these music icons!
But it wasn’t just about performances, honey! The world of fashion was just buzzing in 2022! We were loving the latest drag fashion trends from Mugler’s Fall-Winter collection to the fabulous designs by Atelier Versace. It was all about glamour, bold silhouettes, and dazzling statement pieces. Oh my god, I think every queen, drag and otherwise, had to add a Mugler bodysuit to their wardrobes. The style? So on point.
And what would we be without a splash of London-chic, right? Back in 2022, Molly Goddard made us all crave her whimsical, colourful pieces, and Riccardo Tisci of Burberry had us feeling royal.
2022 was definitely the year of tutus! They were on everyone from Rihanna’s maternity looks to the catwalks of Christian Dior. Honestly, they became the must-have accessory. We were literally seeing them everywhere. 💖
So you see, darlings, a drag queen's journey through time, especially a time-traveling ballerina in a pink tutu, is always an adventure!
