Post Number 1227: March in Drag History: Twirling Through Time in my Tutu!

Welcome, my darlings, to another edition of Pink-Tutu.com, your monthly dose of Drag History! This month, we’re stepping back in time to March 2022.

Grab your pinkest tutu, darlings, because today we're twirling back to a time when drag was absolutely slaying it worldwide! Now, I may be a little biased towards all things pink and frilly, but March 2022 was a sparkling month in Drag History.

But first, allow me to introduce myself: I'm Emma, your resident time-travelling ballerina queen from Derbyshire. This blog is my passion, and I spend my time (when I’m not doing gigs, naturally!) using my magical pink tutu to journey back to some of the most iconic drag moments in history. It’s quite the fabulous responsibility, and it certainly helps with the shopping…

This month, we’re sparkling across the globe to see some truly remarkable drag shows. Here's what’s happening in March 2022:

From the United States: Drag Race, Pride, and the Art of Drag

Let's kick things off in the US, where drag is as fierce as a stiletto heel!

  • RuPaul’s Drag Race is back with another incredible season! Season 14 had all the drama, glamour, and lip-sync battles you could ever want. Remember when Maddy Morphosis stole the show in that glorious neon pink ballgown? Iconic! The show brought even more international attention to the drag scene, showcasing the talent, creativity, and individuality that makes drag so magnetic.

  • March also brought pride month celebrations across the US, and drag was at the heart of many festivities. Drag queens powered up those lip syncs and sashayed across stages all over the country, bringing their message of love, acceptance, and celebration to a global audience. I, personally, was at the LA Pride parade, wearing the most dazzling pink tulle creation that made me stand out among the fabulous crowds!

  • Remember Alyssa Hunter, a talented Drag Race contestant from Season 11? She was busy spreading drag joy as a part of “The Art of Drag” exhibition, a captivating show of photography that captured the essence of drag culture! The exhibit travelled all around America and beyond, showing how drag art, performances, and storytelling continue to evolve and break down barriers. It made me incredibly proud!

UK Drag: Twirling to the Top!

Let’s swing over to the UK where the drag scene was just as exciting.

  • The UK Drag scene was thriving, full of creative performances, shows, and social events! The fabulous "Drag Idol UK" was in full swing, showcasing some of the country's best talent and the competition was steaming hot! I watched one particular act where this amazing drag queen used nothing but feather boas and light to perform a moving dance, pure theatrical art!

  • London, with its renowned theatre district and historic gay scenes, was a magnet for drag shows. Some of my favourite drag institutions - like the legendary “Roxy”, the “Horse & Groom”, and the "Comedy Store" – were pumping out incredible drag acts!

  • Even Manchester, a city famous for its underground and clubbing scene, had some superstar drag nights that attracted massive crowds.

It's not surprising, the UK is known for being home to some extraordinary drag legends. Even back then, people like the amazing “Divine" (who started his career in the 1970s!) and "John Waters", a visionary filmmaker who helped put drag front and centre in popular culture, were leaving their mark on the world! I was lucky enough to catch John Waters perform in March 2022 during a Q&A event! His wit, his perspective on society and how drag plays such a vital role in culture - a must-see for any Drag enthusiast!

From Europe to Asia, the Drag World Is A-Spinning!

Drag was making its presence felt across the world, with diverse and thriving communities bringing their own unique perspectives to the art form.

  • Spain is renowned for its Drag Race legacy - with many legendary queens going on to inspire others around the world! This month, in March 2022, there was a fabulous exhibition of Drag art, featuring iconic imagery and powerful photographs, a must-see for any art-loving drag queen like myself.

  • In Germany I discovered an innovative theatre production featuring drag queen poetry readings. The power and beauty of words coming alive through a drag lens - it truly moved me!

  • I also snuck a peek into Thailand where "Miss Universe" was celebrated with fabulous drag performances that fused the ancient Thai tradition with cutting-edge drag fashion, proving that the world is infinitely connected when it comes to drag!

A Pink Tutu Moment in History!

The most magical part of time travel? Sharing my experiences with you all! But there was this one superstar moment I felt compelled to share about March 2022.

Remember those times I said my pink tutu was magical? I found myself in New York, caught in a time warp and landed smack bang in the middle of the "New York Pride March"! Now, as a seasoned time traveler, I've seen some incredible things but this took the cake, or the cupcake if you’re with me.

Hundreds and hundreds of stunningly-dressed queens of every background, all coming together for a massive celebration of acceptance and pride. It was powerful, it was heartfelt, it was truly magical. There were smiles, tears, love and dancing. There was such a mix of music and joy, that my pink tutu was nearly swept away by the excitement of it all. It was that moment that made me understand how Drag isn't just about fashion, it's about unity, storytelling, and a call for love and acceptance! It made my heart soar.

Tutu Inspiration!

And now, to my beloved readers, I leave you with some of my favourite Drag queen moments of March 2022! Take note, darlings, it's all about the details, the confidence, the attitude, and the fabulousity.

  • A glitter-laden eyeshadow look, paired with a sharp feline flick! Oh, it's so glamorous!
  • A power-clash of colours on a tutu! Remember that orange-and-purple tulle combo that stole the stage! The key is, you can't have too much colour, darlings!
  • A playful feather boa, adding some drama and motion to a performance. Let it swirl and dance in the spotlight!

I can’t wait for what March has in store for the world of drag, I’m sure it’s gonna be a fabulous sparkling extravaganza! Keep an eye on this space and I’ll let you know how tutu-tacular it all unfolds.
