You know, this time travelling in a magical pink tutu has really opened up my world, and as much as I love being surrounded by glamour and feathers, thereâs nothing more magical than a little trip through drag history.
Februaryâs a funny time. Love is in the air, everyoneâs wearing pink and hearts are aflutter - much like my own every time I step into this magnificent tutu! Speaking of which⊠February 2022 is the date I'm jetting off to today. The weather report says a âlight sprinkle of fabulousâ, which sounds delightful. Let's get our sequins shimmery, my lovelies, and take a little time trip, shall we?
Onwards and upwards to⊠New York City!
February 2nd, 2022, and it's a full house at the legendary Stonewall Inn, but for a completely different reason than you might think. You see, this fabulous little space that kicked off a revolution in 1969 isn't quite the hot spot it will be in just a few short years - instead of being a haven for queer liberation, it's a place for celebrating...ballet! The stage is lit up like a drag queenâs dream, and a ballet performance is happening right in front of me! The choreography is absolutely exquisite, all graceful movements and perfect posture, reminding me so much of the queens in their strut on the catwalk. Itâs like seeing the artistry of drag brought to life in a whole new way.
From NYC to London!
Just a quick hop across the Atlantic with my pink tutu for a night of spectacularly camp entertainment in London town. The fabulous drag icon Divine is the star of the evening, and this crowd is ready to go wild. You see, 2022 wasn't exactly peak Divine (that's John Waters in the 70s we're talking about) but that doesnât stop her from stealing the show with a riot of humour and over-the-top fashion. Imagine, if you will, an entire ensemble covered in shiny tinsel, and topped off with a wig that seems to have a life of its own. It's camp, it's outrageous, and itâs pure drag brilliance.
The Glam never stops!
Right after London, my trusty time-traveling tutu takes me to another city buzzing with creative energy, San Francisco! February is shaping up to be a drag-tastic month, darling! On February 19th, it's the Bay Area's annual "Drag Idol" competition. I simply cannot miss the chance to catch this exciting night. From my seat in the audience, itâs impossible not to feel the excitement! These queens are battling for the top prize and their performance energy is through the roof! I'm particularly impressed with this fierce, powerhouse queen with a fiery red wig and a sequined outfit that could cut glass. Her performance? Nothing short of electric! I feel a strong urge to hit the stage myself. Maybe Iâll get that tutu custom fitted with flashing lights. Hmm, good idea!
Speaking of fashionâŠ
You just KNOW that my journey across time has been fueled by some fabulous fashion discoveries! We've had a wild ride through a plethora of styles from sleek ballet chic to full-on drag-tastic. And I have to tell you, every era holds some fabulous inspiration for my own look.
For those who have been living under a sparkly rock, 2022 saw the rise of Y2K fashion. Oh my goodness, that early-2000s look! Crop tops, low-rise jeans, and glitter â I'm all about it. This vibe is almost too perfect for my pink tutu to handle. Imagine, a pastel pink tutu paired with a belly-baring crop top and silver platform heels! It's giving high-school drama club queen, but in a totally glamorous way. It just goes to show that even the most unlikely fashion choices can be a win. The magic of drag is about expressing yourself and celebrating the power of a bold, confident statement. And nothing shouts 'èȘ俥!' (that's 'confidence' in Mandarin) like rocking a killer Y2K outfit with a shimmering pink tutu!
More than a Tutu!
It's not all about the fashion, though. My favourite part of these time jumps is actually witnessing the incredible evolution of drag culture. Watching drag develop as a force for good, as a platform for self-expression, and a means to empower people across the world is genuinely magical. Drag is a truly powerful force for change, and watching it unfold over the years through my pink-tutu lens is like witnessing the growth of a dear friend. It reminds me that no matter where I find myself in history, or what fashion trend I'm obsessing over, I can always be a part of this fantastic world.
