It was an exciting start to the year, and this gal, clad in her finest, shimmering pink tutu, was ready to embrace it all. But before I tell you about the incredible drag events of January, letâs travel back to me, here in the present.
Last month, I managed to snag a stunning vintage tutu at the âOutlandish Coutureâ vintage store. Oh my, sheâs a masterpiece - swathes of pink silk, with fluffy tulle layers and sparkly embroidery - perfect for my upcoming performance at âThe Glittery Glitzballâ this weekend. Let's be honest, it was really just an excuse to buy more tutus - they truly are my weakness.
But anyway, enough about me, let's journey back to January 2023!
The Drag World: A Year of Glitter and Glamour!
Firstly, letâs discuss that glittering gem, RuPaulâs Drag Race! The iconic competition was still making headlines after a spectacular season, showcasing so much talent, drama and heart-wrenching emotional breakdowns! There was an absolute buzz about the season 15 finale - weâre talking a sea of sparkly eyeshadow, feathers, and pure sass. It truly set the tone for the year.
But it wasnât just the big names who were setting the world on fire. January 2023 was alive with a global surge of amazing local talent. From small-town dives to massive metropolitan venues, drag queens everywhere were proving that drag was more than just a form of entertainment, it was a way of life.
Beyond the Spotlight
While television and big shows definitely dominate the news, drag life exists on a local level too, right down in the grassroots. Iâm talking about drag brunches, open mic nights, and community theatre productions.
Back in January, I found out about this amazing community project called âDrag for Goodâ. It was started by a group of talented queens in London and it used drag as a tool to promote self-acceptance and support marginalized communities. This is what makes drag truly special.
And you know, my favourite part? It wasnât all about extravagant costumes or makeup, it was about connecting and creating a space for self-expression. It felt incredibly empowering and deeply moving.
A Whirlwind Tour through Drag History
To add some sparkle to our historical trip, let's journey to New York City!
Now, New York has been a centre of drag culture for decades, so January 2023 was buzzing with legendary performers taking to the stage. I was blown away by the performances of the âDrag House of Extravaganza,â with their fabulous routines and stunning costumes. These performers were true legends, pushing the boundaries of drag performance and inspiring a whole new generation of performers. It was truly exhilarating to watch their energy and charisma shine through.
Pink Tutus: Spreading the Love!
Back to present-day Emma! You know I can't travel through time without attempting to inspire at least one person to embrace the magic of the pink tutu! This time, I was able to find the most adorable pink tutu at a local vintage shop - complete with shimmering pink sequined butterflies! My mission, as usual, is to inspire a change! What better way to do this than to rock this adorable tutu on the next #pinktutuWednesday! I think even a jaded fashionista canât resist that!
