Hey dolls! It's your favourite time-travelling tutu queen, Emma, back with another fabulously flamboyant journey through the shimmering tapestry of drag history! This month, we're dipping our toes, and twirling our tutus, into the magical world of August 2027, darlings.
As you all know, my dear readers, August is all about sparkle and glitter - it's the peak of the summer drag season! Think scorching stages, fierce dance-offs, and dazzling gowns that scream, "We're here, we're queer, and we're fabulous!"
Now, August 2027 promised to be an extra-special month for us, because… well… let’s just say there was a LOT happening on the drag scene.
Let’s start with the London Pride Drag Extravaganza! My, oh my, this wasn't just any parade - it was a full-on drag spectacular, a whirlwind of colours, feathers, and the most extravagant costumes imaginable. The main stage at Trafalgar Square was absolutely buzzing, and it felt like every single queen in London, and beyond, was strutting their stuff. My favourite performance? A divine group of drag kings channeling legendary rock icons, like the real Freddie Mercury! Pure magic!
Now, hold on to your sequins, darling, because I popped over to New York City, where the Queens of Broadway Festival was in full swing! They had everything from drag burlesque to comedy queens performing a sassy and hilarious take on Broadway's iconic musicals. I saw the most fabulous rendition of Cats… all done with fluffy, bright pink tutus! We're talking full on felines in pink!
But my favourite moment, absolutely, darling? The legendary RuPaul's Drag Race finale was on, and there was so much buzz about who would win this year’s crown! They did it massive, a live stadium show in Times Square! I'm talking LED screens, dancers, incredible choreography, and the iconic runway reveal! It was an absolutely divine, high-octane show. And to top it off, the winner had the most sensational pink feather boa. (She may have been an icon but I think I gave her a run for her money on the runway!)
While the main stage was hotting up with drama, a quieter scene was blossoming in Sydney – the Antipodean Drag Summit. This was the first year for this phenomenal festival that celebrated the art of drag and its unique stories within the vibrant Antipodean drag community! It had drag bingo with hilarious queens like Draggy Dave, makeup masterclasses, and the most gorgeous drag show at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Talk about a real-life drag fairytale!
But we’re not done just yet, darlings! I made a quick hop over to Tokyo to see “Tutu Tales: The Story of Drag in Asia", a spectacular exhibition that showcased the incredible history and artistry of Asian drag, through fashion, photos, and interviews. It was truly awe-inspiring, and seeing the intricate costumes and unique stories of these groundbreaking drag queens really got me thinking about the true history of drag - and its power to unite people and challenge the norm. It really resonated with me as an avid fan of both ballet and drag!
Speaking of ballet, and being an avid fan myself, did you know August 2027 was also the “Tutu Tuesdays" at the Royal Opera House? I practically went mad for tutus all month, and even met some fabulous ballerinas there. There’s something magical about those fluffy pink tutus on stage, isn’t there?
Now, if you're thinking about embracing your inner drag queen, my lovely readers, August 2027 was definitely a great month to find your sparkle! From huge pride events and drag festivals to drag performances everywhere, it was the month for being unapologetically yourself and celebrating diversity in all its fabulousness!
Oh! Before I forget - don’t forget to catch up with our monthly Tutu Tales videos! We're filming the highlights of every time travel adventure in our signature "tutu style", with gorgeous costumes, flamboyant poses, and hilarious banter!
And remember, dear readers, my mission is to get everyone wearing pink tutus! And while we may be all about rainbows and sparkly celebrations, it's important to never forget our responsibility to champion inclusivity and shine a spotlight on the challenges that some of us still face. Let’s celebrate drag's role as a platform for activism, a force for change, and a symbol of unity in our beautiful rainbow community.
So, here's to a fabulous August 2027! Until next month, darling, stay safe, stay glamorous, and keep on twirling!
Love, Emma 💖 www.pink-tutu.com
