Hiya lovelies! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu, your monthly dose of all things fabulous! This month I'm shimmying my way back to 2028. Remember when we were all obsessed with holographic everything and space-age fashion? It's like looking back to the '50s! Anyway, darling, I had such a whale of a time flitting through the year 2028 in my magical, pink, time-travelling tutu! (As ever, a HUGE thank you to all the drag queens who keep me going with their dazzling performances, because you know, those fabulous performances literally fund this little adventure of mine!)
As always, the world of drag in 2028 was, in a word, INCREDIBLE! It truly is such a delight to witness how drag continues to evolve and blossom, taking its place firmly in mainstream pop culture. There was a brilliant sense of community, with queens collaborating, supporting each other, and just spreading joy across the globe! You can truly see that this artform has found its place amongst the great global art movements. Oh, and the fashions! I just have to say, I can’t resist a good twirl in a fab tutu and 2028 definitely didn’t disappoint!
Now, let me tell you a bit about the events that grabbed my attention…
Drag On The Moon - Ok, hear me out! Apparently, 2028 saw the first-ever drag show performed on the moon. Talk about a galaxy-sized dream come true! Can you imagine the impact of a drag queen with a shimmering, extraterrestrial look performing in that breathtaking setting? This just shows you the sheer limitless potential of drag. I mean, can we talk about the sheer volume of fabulousity that must have filled those moon craters? It had to have been a fabulous, cosmic extravaganza!
The Pink Revolution - The tutu boom that changed the world! Oh darling, it was as if a pink cloud had enveloped the entire world! You know how I have always been on a quest to have everyone embrace the exquisite tutu? Well, in 2028, that quest seemed to be almost over! A growing number of drag queens around the globe were, surprisingly enough, inspired by my little pink tutu dream and were spreading the joy and glamour of this fantastic fashion piece! From couture creations to everyday wear, it felt as though a vibrant pink tide had swept across the globe, creating a new and incredibly wonderful sense of fashion unity. It even reached the most surprising of places! Can you imagine the sheer loveliness of the ballet classes of rural Alaska bursting with the elegance of tulle and the glorious pinks? Pure magic!
Drag World Fashion Week - Milan & Tokyo. As expected, Drag World Fashion Week took place in the glamorous locations of Milan and Tokyo this year, it really was a showcase of stunning creativity and artistry. There were shows every single day with incredible talent from across the globe, all the major designers showcased their collections and it just made my heart burst with joy to be there! I’d tell you more, but dear me, you just wouldn't believe it. The extravagance of the entire fashion extravaganza was… breathtakingly divine!
I particularly enjoyed the show from Paris’ "La Nuit des Tutu" where the whole event was dedicated to tutus of all shapes and colours! (Think glittery pink tutus with holographic detail!). I even made a few new, lovely, tutu loving friends while I was there, and got a whole new bunch of ideas for my next trip through the centuries, too!
The New "Drag-tivists" You may have heard the expression ‘Drag’ is about more than just fabulous fashion. It’s also about social commentary, using entertainment to create awareness and promote positive change, right? This really resonated with the Drag community in 2028, as the drag queen 'drag-tivists' stepped onto the global stage to advocate for crucial causes with creativity, humour and strength! I heard about a particular performance from Dada Drag, an international collective that uses drag and interactive performances to challenge political narratives which went viral! In a performance they were using colourful body makeup, and powerful visuals they were taking on issues such as the fight for the LGBTQIA+ rights, climate change and political inequality! You really got a sense that these queens were using their voices to create real change, which is utterly fantastic.
It’s a Drag Race - Australia, Thailand and China - The Global Takeover! This has become one of my favourite annual events, you see darling, it’s all about queens of the world competing! Drag Race truly went global in 2028, from the sunny beaches of Australia to the bustling streets of Thailand and the bustling cities of China! It's incredible to watch so many talented, diverse, queens showing off their unique skills and charisma on such a grand stage! But this month, darling, I need to say a BIG thank you to everyone in China! You know how much I love pink, and well, your celebration of all things fabulous and fabulous fashion is totally my thing! So, of course, I couldn't miss the amazing Drag Race: China -The Next Runway Star with the iconic performances! They definitely proved that China’s next generation of drag talent were seriously on fire, with all the dazzling costumes and high-fashion extravaganza! It was the kind of show you would literally give your wig for, because you simply wouldn’t want to miss it!
And finally… as if the drag scene of 2028 could be any more dazzling, you must hear about my most wonderful encounter… The infamous drag queen "Ruby Rainbow", of all places, performing right there in Derby!" It was totally amazing, it was a dream come true, you can’t imagine how delighted I was! It’s fair to say that seeing one of my absolute all-time favourite queens strut her stuff so near to home… and let's not forget she was wearing a fabulous pink tutu, as if she had plucked the colour directly out of my mind (perhaps I did send some cosmic vibes across time! ), and she had a huge fluffy, feather-tastic, tutu-esque pink boa! Honestly, it was all too much and not at all enough! So, the next time I see Ruby Rainbow, which hopefully is on my next trip, I have an idea for her to embrace a full, fluffy, Pink Tutu set… oh, imagine the photos we could create! I shall be adding her performance date into my time travel itinerary... it’s my birthday weekend next month! Oh dear, maybe I am being a bit premature, but a birthday tutu for my favourite queen is totally something I must have!
Remember darlings - Be fabulous, stay bold and never forget to twirl! See you all next month. With love from the pink-tutu blog…
