Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet where time itself becomes a dazzling runway! Iām your ever-so-fashionable friend, Emma, and my magical pink tutu has whisked me away to a most glamorous date: October 10th, 2031. Itās an absolute belter of a day in drag history, so settle in with your fanciest tea and a generous helping of glitter because weāre about to step back in time to witness a real slice of drag magic!
As you know, darling, my favourite place in the world is the stage. And my heart melts for the thrill of a good drag show! Today, Iām thrilled to be sharing with you an experience I know will leave you longing for that big, pink tutu in your closet, or maybe even just that sprinkle of sparkle in your life! I'm going to let you in on a little secret - this day, 10th October, 2031, is an absolutely fabulous date in drag history.
You see, the International Drag Ball is in full swing across the globe, bringing together queens from every corner of the planet in a vibrant display of beauty, artistry, and performance. Imagine, darlings, a dazzling, multicoloured extravaganza of drag fashion, captivating music, and spectacular talent! From the grand ballroom of London's Royal Albert Hall to the throbbing clubs of Tokyo, the energy is electric!
But before I go on about the dazzling performances Iāve been lucky enough to catch, letās dive into the origins of this spectacular annual event! The first ever International Drag Ball was a spontaneous affair in 1979, held in a dusty old warehouse in New York City. It was a humble gathering of just a handful of queens, but the passion and dedication that fuelled those early balls laid the foundation for the spectacular global event it is today. It truly highlights how powerful drag is ā a testament to its enduring force in celebrating individuality, defying expectations, and pushing boundaries.
Now, picture this, darlings! Imagine the glittering scene. Queens are adorned in breathtaking costumes; extravagant feathered gowns, gravity-defying wigs, a shimmering tapestry of colour! The energy is contagious, the crowd roaring, and the atmosphere buzzing! This celebration is much more than just a competition, darlings, itās a collective expression of talent, passion and a united celebration of āqueendomā. Itās an irresistible force that transcends national borders, skin colour, or age, reminding everyone of the universality of drag as an art form.
And speaking of talent, darling, the drag acts tonight are phenomenal! In Paris, weāre blessed to see a stunning performance by the internationally renowned drag queen, La Biche Royale, who mesmerises the crowd with her elegant, neo-classical interpretation of Parisian glamour. Over in Tokyo, Drag Prince Kohei is captivating audiences with his explosive mix of high-energy voguing and fierce urban style, paying tribute to the ballroom cultureās rich history.
In London, darlings, I am absolutely thrilled to be present at a fantastic drag brunch! Drag performers in shimmering pink tutus are filling the air with music, laugher and flamboyant humour. I simply had to be here - I couldn't imagine a more fabulous setting to embrace this spectacular moment! It's absolutely joyous and a real celebration of the fabulous energy of the Drag Ball.
But the excitement isnāt confined to these big cities, darling. It's bubbling over, literally bursting onto the streets of villages, towns, and even the smallest of settlements. This global celebration is truly encompassing everyone and everything.
You see, I was just in a sweet little village in Derbyshire where the locals were hosting a Drag Ball in their village hall! This intimate event had local queens, complete with spectacular homemade costumes, and there was a heartwarming air of unity in the crowd - a true representation of the universal appeal of drag! It made me realise how much a single act of dressing up can bring a community together. I must confess, itās moments like these that really inspire me.
However, while this day is filled with celebration, darling, itās also a powerful reminder that itās only been a short time since drag had to fight for its right to be seen, to be heard, to be recognised as a legitimate and worthy form of entertainment and artistic expression.
I feel privileged to travel through time and bear witness to these historical moments, each one weaving its way into the grand tapestry of Drag History, and a testament to its enduring power.
And as we move forward into this extraordinary future of Drag, my message remains unchanged: Letās embrace our differences and embrace the freedom to express ourselves! It's about loving who you are, darlings, about celebrating uniqueness, individuality, and simply enjoying being gloriously, beautifully YOU!
And of course, whatās a Drag Ball without a fabulous dance, darling? This spectacular event brings together drag artists, music, and fashion all rolled into one fabulous night! It truly inspires me to continue this important work, documenting the stories, highlighting the pioneers, and championing those whose incredible talent makes this art form such a joyous experience for everyone.
But I wouldn't be a true queen, if I didnāt tell you all to grab your fabulous friends and get yourself to the most glorious Drag Ball, in your town, your city, your village! And even better, darlings, letās make sure every one is rocking their pink tutu! Itās all about that flamboyant, free, fabulous energy, thatās a symbol of our community, a statement of acceptance and love.
Oh darling, what a journey this has been! Now, I'll be on my way to discover the future of Drag, with a dazzling, pink-tutu filled dance party somewhere in my near future!
