I popped on my most fabulous hot pink tutu, sprinkled with more sequins than a disco ball on New Year's Eve, and took a leap of faith through the time-traveling portal – I just love it when my wardrobe blends in seamlessly with my destinations, don’t you? Oh, it's all thanks to this wonderful magical pink tutu you see. I get the most divine looks with it, and then, WHAM! A swirl, a glittery whoosh, and I’m off on another grand adventure into drag history.
I landed this month right smack bang in the middle of bustling Hong Kong. And oh, what a sight it was! Imagine, streets lined with flashing neon signs in all the colours of the rainbow. The energy, my dears! It was positively electric!
The Hong Kong Drag Scene:
Hong Kong’s got it going on in 2033, that's for sure. There are drag bars practically on every corner. Drag is such a celebrated art form here. The streets were abuzz with people and every drag performance was unique. From dazzling shows with extravagant costumes and make-up, to intimate storytelling, drag here really pushes the boundaries, and it’s completely accepted and celebrated. They know how to party, my dears! I have to admit, seeing drag as mainstream like this in such a cosmopolitan and vibrant city… it simply took my breath away!
I saw some utterly spectacular drag performances. At 'The Golden Phoenix' - oh, such a grand theatre! - it felt like the stage was simply exploding with colourful costumes and dazzling lights. One queen in particular stood out. She was a living, breathing spectacle, all silver, feathers, and sheer power. This queen owned that stage! She truly captured the essence of Hong Kong drag.
I caught a more intimate drag experience in a cute, pink-lit cocktail bar. The show was called "The Moonlit Night". It was like stepping into another world. This queen was all about storytelling and humour, a real chameleon on stage. She brought a kind of ethereal magic to the intimate space, like a delicate little flower growing amidst all the bustle of the city. Her performance was raw, powerful, and completely genuine, you could feel the emotion radiating from the stage. It really was such a heartwarming performance.
The 2033 World Of Drag:
Let's travel around the world! May 2033, the drag scene is global, it's truly unstoppable! There was the launch of a brand new International Drag Queen Hall of Fame in New York City – a museum celebrating every single fabulous drag queen who ever lived. It's absolutely packed with dazzling costumes, wigs, makeup, and more, my dears! The launch featured a legendary lineup of drag queens - some who were stars even in the early 20th century!
And on the other side of the world, Australia's new 'Queen Of The Outback' reality show premiered - the Drag Race fandom is truly world-wide! The contestants came from all walks of life. They're making their way to becoming drag royalty and it’s bringing in new audiences from every corner of Australia! Imagine! They are truly using their platforms to inspire and push boundaries in ways never seen before.
Here in Derbyshire, England, we've been doing it our own way for a while! The local scene is truly flourishing, our legendary local pub, 'The Rose & Crown', is hosting a 'Drag Brunch' series called ‘The Divine Divas of Derbyshire’ and they’re completely smashing it! It’s fantastic to see local drag queens stepping into the limelight and showcasing their incredible talent!
## Tutu Trend Alert:
Speaking of amazing talent… did you see those new haute couture tutus I saw at this amazing new boutique called "Twirl & Shimmer" in London, my dears?! This place has the most extravagant creations! Every single tutu is a work of art, and they're inspired by iconic ballet performances and the queens on the world stage! They truly have the spirit of fashion and theatre shining through. My new iridescent pink tutu from "Twirl & Shimmer", oh, it's a work of art, it really is. Just wait until you see the photos, darling!
The Pink Tutu's Message For 2033:
And darling, with the time-traveling tutu on my hips, my heart is full! You see, being here in 2033 shows me the amazing positive evolution of the drag scene. 2033 - and I mean it when I say this, - it's a whole new era for drag queens all around the world! Queens are not just on stage and in the clubs anymore! They are CEOs, doctors, artists… they’re changing the world! They are a force of inspiration and creativity!
And so my message to all of you is, don’t be afraid to embrace your uniqueness. Wear your heart on your sleeve. Twirl, shine, and dare to be different. You could be the next Drag Superstar, and darling, I hope you are! Don't forget to let your freak flag fly - and it all begins with a simple, oh so elegant… Pink Tutu.
Until next month darling. I'll be zipping around to find more drag history to share with you. Until then…
