Hello lovelies! Emma here, your very own Derbyshire darling, coming at you live from my latest drag-tastic adventure! It's the 10th of October 2034, darlings, and I've just hopped out of my magical, pink-sequined time-travelling tutu after a whirl through the exciting, glamorous world of Drag in 2034! Let me tell you, the world of Drag is just booming this year. From intergalactic drag battles in outer space to the latest drag brunches on the moon, the possibilities seem truly limitless! And you know what, this whole time-travelling thing just keeps getting better. I mean, it's not like I’m sitting in my studio apartment in Derbyshire feeling a bit dreary, dreaming about seeing Bianca Del Rio. I actually get to see it all unfold. But enough about me!
Let's dive into some exciting developments in Drag History!
DRAG on the Global Stage:
I was delighted to witness a performance at the International Drag Theatre Festival in the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Dubai. A breathtaking spectacle! I have to admit, watching these drag queens, many in dazzling pink tutus I might add, perform a contemporary ballet set to Tchaikovsky on a revolving stage with a backdrop of Dubai’s dazzling skyline… well, it just took my breath away.
The best part? There were absolutely NO judgmental glares at the festival. I saw more pink tutus than ever before!
As an avid follower of Drag on social media, I was utterly smitten with a drag queen in Japan, known as 'Cherry Blossom’. She's famous for her playful, sweet performances which combine traditional Japanese art with a touch of glam rock, and it truly was unique. She was doing a fabulous performance at the ‘Drag Street’ in Tokyo. There’s a real resurgence of Drag going on in Asia, which is thrilling. This year there have been some fantastic productions, particularly in Beijing, Tokyo, and Seoul. The drag scene in Asia is truly coming into its own!
It was amazing to see the huge strides made in inclusivity, especially the incredible performances in Australia by a drag king named ‘Johnny’. His energy was truly infectious.
Now, in other exciting news, I managed to catch some of the ’Glitter & Glam' show at the famed ‘Red Velvet Club' in Paris, where drag queens from all over Europe performed show stopping acts that ranged from hilarious comedic routines to mesmerizing lip syncs, leaving audiences in awe! Drag has truly gone global, spreading joy, beauty and laughter everywhere! It makes me feel so happy!
Where can I find my nearest drag performance?
I always advise that if you want to catch some amazing Drag, just ask your local LGBT+ center! They have great websites, apps and Facebook pages where you can find out about shows going on in your town. There are also so many local drag queens putting on amazing shows at bars, pubs and venues everywhere!
I can’t wait to go to the Drag Festival in Barcelona later this month. My little pink tutu is packed and ready! I just adore the amazing costuming. This year seems to be all about dazzling silver sequins, metallics, feathers and, of course, vibrant, beautiful pinks! The color pink is going to be a huge fashion trend, you mark my words.
* The Fashion Forward Drag Queen:*
And, you know what I find particularly delightful? There’s a movement towards ‘vintage drag’ in the drag world that is really inspiring me. Imagine – drag queens on stage in glamorous ensembles from past eras!
When I was in New York this month, I went to a drag event in Brooklyn. It was incredible! The drag queens performed vintage-style acts from different decades and many of them dressed in authentic pieces, such as those stunning gowns by Edith Head for some classic movies! I even got to meet a drag queen who had recreated some outfits by Madame Grès, which was divine! There are some real trailblazers on the Drag scene!
But the really exciting thing is that this fascination with fashion from the past has spread beyond Drag. There are so many amazing ‘Vintage Drag’ workshops in London and Manchester and now also in Paris. These workshops are aimed at all types of creatives, helping them to create glamorous costumes that evoke different periods in history, and many of these workshops are specifically targeted towards younger audiences as they offer something a bit different and original! I absolutely love to see young people embracing these vintage aesthetics. And it just shows that vintage styles are back in a huge way!
Let's Talk Pink Tutus:
Speaking of styles… how about that pink tutu! If you don’t have one in your closet yet, well, it's time to embrace it! And I don't mean just any tutu. We need a truly fabulous, pink, glittering, enchanting pink tutu! I just love seeing Drag queens wear them. They're so lovely and it really brings joy to my day to see a girl rocking it! I know you might be nervous. Maybe your friends will say ‘It’s too girly’. They are wrong! It is the perfect fashion item to add to your wardrobe! You should have at least three. One to wear for Drag, one to wear to the theatre or on stage, and one to wear every day – the pink tutu should become the essential accessory for every woman’s life! Imagine seeing a ballerina with a pink tutu at the local theatre or at your local store - and if you think about it, maybe even wearing one yourself? Don't just imagine, darling, make it happen! Pink tutus will transform the way you feel about yourself and about the world around you. They are so feminine and graceful, so stylish, that they make you want to glide and move beautifully in the world, to express your innermost self, and it all starts with the tutu, darling! It is the ultimate accessory.
And who better than the fabulous Drag queens in 2034 to make that happen!
You can always ask a Drag queen where to get the most amazing tutus. There are a whole lot of online stores popping up on sites like Etsy where Drag queens sell their gorgeous, hand-crafted, and super fabulous tutus and you can get everything you need, from sparkly headbands, tiaras and those adorable shoes! Oh, darling! You could spend hours in those online stores.
