Hello darlings! Emma here, back from another wild adventure through the shimmering corridors of drag history. It's time for another entry in my pink-tutu-tastic time travel blog!
April, that most beautiful month (for those of you who love the crisp Spring air, dazzling cherry blossom trees and ā of course - my favourite month for rocking a pink tutu!) took me on a glamorous trip back to the year 2018 in New York City.
You see, darlings, Iām a simple girl from Derbyshire, but a girl with big dreams! As I sit here sipping my morning English Breakfast Tea and dreaming of the grand ballet Iāll be performing tonight, I find myself absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer wonder of what it means to be a drag queen today. Iām not just performing for the laughs and the cheers ā although letās face it, those are definitely important parts of the magic - but Iām spreading a message of love, acceptance, and boundless glitter. And with my magic pink tutu, Iām doing it across all of time, darling!
Back to 2018: A Glittering Time Capsule of Drag!
2018, as I found, was an incredibly exciting time to be in drag. New York City pulsed with creativity, and I had the privilege of seeing some truly groundbreaking performances. The queens of the scene were pushing the boundaries of art and expression, making their mark on the world of entertainment with powerful stories and captivating visuals.
The legendary āRuPaulās Drag Raceā was a smash hit, drawing viewers worldwide, which was so wonderful because it helped showcase a new era of diverse drag royalty! From the sassy queens to the heartfelt storytellers, everyone on that stage was breaking down stereotypes and shining a light on the power of drag.
It's always exciting to see the drag scene evolve, with new genres emerging and new generations of queens bringing fresh ideas to the table. The energy and talent I witnessed in NYC 20 years ago are still inspiring today!
Catching a Show - The "A Night at the Met" Extravaganza!
It wouldn't be a time-travelling adventure without a spectacular drag show, wouldn't it, dearies? Well, this trip wouldn't disappoint!
The first night in 2018, I saw "A Night at the Met." It was hosted by this hilarious queen, Bianca Del Rio (a drag queen icon! You just have to Google her ā youāll be so delighted!), who, in a sharp suit, had the audience rolling with laughter, telling jokes that I still remember today, they were that funny. I have a particular love for a queen with great stage presence, you see. She oozed confidence, sassy and sharp ā it was quite magical to see how effortlessly she took the stage.
"A Night at the Met" was themed around iconic outfits worn by some of the worldās most fashionable people, and let me tell you, darlings, the queens delivered! From the glamour of haute couture to the punk edge of rock and roll, each look was a showstopper. Imagine a glamorous tribute to the Met Gala with fabulous interpretations of the themes, and youāre getting the idea!
It was just⦠brilliant, darling! They were so effortlessly elegant, bringing so much sparkle to a stage already brimming with fabulosity! I loved every single look, every song, every moment. This night was truly an example of why drag is an art form worth celebrating.
Drag Shows, Shopping and a Cuppa - The Glamorous 2018 NYC
Between seeing shows and rocking out at iconic queer bars (theyāre definitely more than just a bar darling!), I took time to soak up the vibrant energy of the city. Now, for all of you who arenāt aware, drag queens love fashion - you just have to look at the amount of feathers and sparkles! The New York of 2018 offered an amazing array of shopping destinations. Imagine - everything from high-end boutiques on Fifth Avenue to vintage treasure troves tucked away in charming side streets, itās the perfect place to find a little somethinā somethinā for your fabulous wardrobe.
Now I always make it a habit to be kind and leave no one out! I wanted to experience the real NYC - the life and soul of its diverse communities, so naturally, a good old cuppa with some locals at a trendy café is always my go-to. You see, even though I have all these fantastic adventures, a nice cup of Earl Grey, made just how I like it (three sugars, darling, a generous dash of milk), with a piece of homemade Victoria Sponge cake from a charming local baker⦠is what I really cherish. It allows me to soak it all in and be a bit introspective about the journey ahead, and always be ready for another exciting drag show!
