Hiya lovelies! It's your gal, Emma, here, ready to take you on another fabulous voyage through time with my trusty, sparkly, pink tutu! This month, we're whizzing to a very exciting date - February 2041. Grab your feather boas, your face glitter, and your most fabulous pair of heels because we're about to witness a real game changer for drag!
A Glittery Glimpse into the Future
Now, 2041, as I'm sure you'll agree, is a long way from our quaint little village in Derbyshire. And guess what? It's not even that far away! It makes me shiver to think it'll be just twenty years, give or take, when the world looks like… well, whatever the world looks like in 2041. But based on the rate technology's been going, I wouldn't be surprised to find flying cars, holographic dancers and talking squirrels. Who knows? Perhaps, just maybe, everyone will have embraced the joy of pink tutus by then? (One can dream, darlings!)
But seriously, the reason this month is such a BIG one for drag history is a massive breakthrough for LGBTQ+ representation in the media. Remember when there was hardly a drag queen on TV, apart from those funny campy blokes in panto? Well, 2041 is the year that saw a HUGE surge in drag reality shows. Not just the usual, glitzy ones, but shows that explored the lives of drag queens, highlighting their everyday struggles and triumphs, and bringing a new sense of depth and understanding to drag for the world to see. This made waves across the globe, not just for our beloved drag community but also for LGBTQ+ rights as a whole. We’re talking a shift in cultural consciousness, dears! And all in fabulousness, naturally!
On The Scene: Where Were The Drag Queens in 2041?
From London to Lagos, Sydney to Sao Paulo, the world was abuzz with drag, thanks to this wave of global media coverage! Across continents, we witnessed some dazzling acts:
The London Blitz!
The legendary Drag Extravaganza was kicking off its tenth season, with a diverse lineup of queens vying for the coveted title. It's no secret that this competition set the stage for drag's mainstream rise in the UK, giving viewers a sneak peek into the creative processes of these queens. They went from campy backstreet dives to packed stadiums! You know me, I'm a big fan of anything extravagant. And let me tell you, this one was an explosion of feather boas, rhinestones, and enough lip sync battles to satisfy the fiercest queen in the world!
Brazilian Beat!
In Sao Paulo, Drag'n'Drop was proving that Latin American drag had a flavour all its own, with high-energy performances and captivating storytelling. The competition went a step further, bringing in international guest judges with expertise ranging from fashion design to social activism. They highlighted the intersectionality of drag culture, showing that being a drag queen was so much more than just glitter and glamour! They're all about community, art, and empowerment!
Down Under Delights!
Meanwhile, over in Sydney, the world's first intergalactic drag performance was underway! (You see, I told you there'd be some funky technology!) "Beyond The Binary" brought together drag artists from different corners of the globe to explore new boundaries in the art form. The stage featured out-of-this-world visuals and innovative choreography that even the most hardcore ballet lover (ahem, me!), would have appreciated!
Oh, and who can forget New York?
We have to give the Queen of the Drag scene a little shout out, after all, drag started in America. In 2041, The New York City Drag Festival celebrated 100 years of drag culture in New York, a spectacle worthy of the world's drag capital! This week-long extravaganza included legendary performances, insightful workshops, and dazzling fashion showcases. They literally had EVERYTHING under the sun! It was a feast for the eyes, and you know I went straight for the fabulous couture and killer drag makeup tutorials!
Shopping!
You already know me: If I'm time travelling, you know there has to be shopping. Oh darling, it was divine! 2041 was an absolute feast for my eyes (and my bank account, if I'm being completely honest!). There was a shop on practically every corner dedicated to sequins, feather boas, and even those ridiculously long fake lashes! I practically fainted with delight in the first shop, which was decked out entirely in pink (no surprise there!), and had the most amazing collection of tulle tutus imaginable. You'll never guess what I did next: I grabbed myself a little treat for the time travelling wardrobe - a gorgeous neon pink tutu with silver sequins that lit up whenever you moved! I couldn't help myself, love. I mean, I’m basically living in the future in 2041 with the fashion!
Making it a Pink World!
So here we are, 2041! An explosion of drag culture on a global scale. From glitzy competition shows to avant-garde performance art, the message is clear: drag has become a powerful tool for self-expression, community building, and breaking down societal barriers. This year, more than ever, we are reminded that drag is a force to be reckoned with. A force that promotes inclusivity, challenges norms, and celebrates the diverse beauty of human expression. It's my dream that everyone, from every corner of the world, embraces the magic of pink tutus, the fun of drag, and the beauty of accepting themselves and each other!
Next month, we’ll be delving even further into drag history. Stay tuned to my pink tutu, darlings. I'll keep you updated with all the latest from the world of drag - from my travels in time, the latest runway looks, to the biggest drag events! And of course, if you want to join my campaign for making the world a pinker place - one tutu at a time! – just join the #PinkTutuArmy and spread the joy of fashion and glitter!
Yours truly,
Emma xoxo
