Hey darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller. It's the 8th of August, 2044, and I'm perched on a particularly comfy cloud, scribbling my monthly blog post for you all. You know how much I love a good dose of Drag Queen History, and this month, my magical tutu has whisked me to a truly thrilling year! Let's dive in, shall we?
Fashion First! I'm not a "fashion is for everyone" type of gal. I believe fashion should be FUN. Bold, fabulous, a little bit camp, and most importantly - Pink. This year, the colour pink has truly taken the drag world by storm! You can't step out on the scene without seeing some killer fuchsia, bubblegum, or hot pink number. My heart fluttered like a hummingbird in a hurricane! Just look at this dazzling gown! Emma shows a photo of a glittering, pink ballgown complete with fluffy pink feathers. It's giving fairytale princess, meets pop star royalty. We're talking sequins, tulle, and absolutely no holding back.
But wait, there's more! Not just pink on pink on pink. This year is about embracing texture. From sequined leotards with fluffy tulle skirts to sparkly bodices adorned with sparkling feathers - the drag community is having a ball (quite literally) with playful, exciting textures. My latest couture creation? Emma flashes a photo of a vibrant pink tutu with layers of sequins and feathers. Oh yes, darling, it's a pink tutu masterpiece, and trust me, I'll be strutting my stuff in this for my upcoming drag shows back in Derbyshire!
Let's talk shows! Oh my darlings, where to even begin? Drag queens in 2044 are living their best lives. The theatre scene is bursting at the seams! Think spectacular musical productions like "RuPaul's Drag Race: The Musical" (and I hear there's a tour coming to Derbyshire soon!) or even immersive drag performances taking place in abandoned warehouses! We're talking extravagant set pieces, dazzling costumes, and powerful performances that will leave you feeling inspired.
But the real magic happens in the smaller, more intimate venues. From LGBTQ+ community centers to underground queer clubs, drag is becoming a truly inclusive force. I spent a fantastic night in London at a show hosted by a phenomenal, trans queen called Violet. It was a breath of fresh air seeing so many diverse, talented artists representing every aspect of the LGBTQ+ community. You just can't help but feel a surge of love and belonging in those spaces!
But drag is not just for the stage! This year, the street is also rocking with drag. I'm talking about Drag Street Shows! Imagine parades full of fierce queens strutting their stuff on a massive stage. This is street theatre at its finest, pushing the boundaries of drag even further.
Speaking of pushing boundaries, have you heard about the Drag Activism movement happening across the globe? In 2044, queens aren't afraid to speak out for what they believe in, using their platforms to advocate for change and promote inclusivity. From protesting against injustices to spreading awareness about important social issues, drag queens are proving that they are not only performers, but powerful voices within society.
Oh, the stories I have! I saw an amazing street show in Paris! Picture this: towering sequined catwalks on a giant, floating barge on the River Seine, drag queens from all over the world strutting their stuff, complete with confetti, pyrotechnics, and Pink light shows. Pure magic, darling, pure magic!
But hold on, there's more! There are exciting new talents popping up everywhere! I saw a burlesque queen called Ruby in Amsterdam, whose routine involved shimmering diamonds, elegant boas, and a swoon-worthy fan dance that left the crowd wanting more. The art of burlesque, paired with the flair of drag, is truly something special.
And let's not forget about the fashion!. Where are we shopping? In 2044, the possibilities are endless! My favorite haunts in London are Rainbow Couture - with the most amazing range of colourful tutus and gowns, and Glam Haus - they do the most fierce and flamboyant makeup sets.
Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, darling, your time travels are so glamorous! But what about the everyday drag experience?" You see, my dears, that's the beauty of drag in 2044 - it's everywhere. We've moved beyond the nightclubs and onto the streets, the schools, the workplaces! You might find a queen in your neighbourhood!
There's even a Drag Cafe in Birmingham, where you can sip your afternoon tea while watching some of the best lip-syncing talent the world has ever seen! How absolutely fab, right?
The drag world of 2044 is bursting with creativity, energy, and above all, inclusivity. I, for one, am beyond excited to see where the journey of drag takes us next! Remember, darling, there's a pink tutu waiting for everyone out there.
Until next month, stay fabulous, stay fierce, and keep twirling!
Love, Emma x
