Hello, my darlings! Emma here, back from another fabulous jaunt through the time-space continuum in my trusty, magical, pink tutu! I hope this month finds you all in the best of spirits and ready to rock those feather boas with me!
It's a real privilege to share this journey with you lovely lot. I've always said that history is a glamorous affair - all those flamboyant characters, those incredible looks, the endless stream of sass and drama. But my personal obsession, you know? Drag queens. And with my little pink tutu, I get to be a part of it all!
Today, I'm taking you right back to 2050, November 1st, a momentous day in Drag history indeed. This time around, I've travelled a little further afield than usual. The sheer sheer excitement almost made me rip the tulle right off my fabulous pink confection!
Firstly, my dear reader, you must know that the global scene is vibrant, bold, and absolutely booming! Drag has reached every corner of the planet and has exploded into the mainstream in ways that, to be honest, even the most seasoned of drag queens from 1980s New York could only dream of.
In London, the scene is simply electrifying - you can't even throw a feather boa in a packed Soho club without hitting a drag queen! From the infamous "Drag Queens Gone Wild" show at The Troxy, featuring 25 drag superstars across different art forms (from theatrical drag to spoken word and aerialists!) to the smaller intimate queer havens on Old Compton Street, drag is alive and kicking, literally!
Speaking of kicks, you should see the Drag & Ballet fusion performances popping up across London, Paris, and even Madrid. Thereās a whole new generation of queens taking on classical ballets with an added layer of sassy fierceness! You'll be surprised at the creativity! There's this one drag queen in Madrid who does Swan Lake wearing nothing but white feathers! And let's not forget the amazing Drag House scene thatās exploded throughout the world. They offer so much support and camaraderie within the drag community - it's a true inspiration.
But letās travel East shall we? Now, my darlings, you might think I'm being hyperbolic when I say that drag in Tokyo has gone supernova. I canāt even express how wildly creative it is there! We're talking futuristic performances, kabuki inspired makeup, dazzling fashion with traditional elements, and an astounding amount of theatricality. Even my little pink tutu feels a little shy next to those elaborate costumes! The Drag Houses in Tokyo have reached cult status - just imagine thousands of drag queens in neon pink and glitter on roller skates, performing in unison! This is some serious, serious power we are witnessing! It's inspiring, revolutionary, and jaw-droppingly awesome.
And finally, the United States, the motherland of Drag! The Drag Olympics have finally become a reality! Now we're not talking your ordinary, āhow many glitter bombs can you throw at the audienceā Olympic games, oh no! We're talking high-stakes, dazzling drag artistry that transcends the stage and embraces every art form - theatre, musical, even visual arts! The spectacle of queens representing their home states is truly a breathtaking display. Even those infamous āRuPaul's Drag Raceā franchisees are now running on an even bigger scale, expanding globally.
However, there are a few downsides to all this fame! Drag queen burnout has become a hot topic in the drag community, especially with social media demanding 24/7 performances! I've spoken to queens who say that finding their artistic individuality amid this wave of drag culture can feel overwhelming. My advice to all the beautiful drag queens out there: keep those tutus close and keep your hearts full of passion. Never let anyone dim your light!
But I want to remind everyone that there's nothing more beautiful than seeing people embracing who they are! This global explosion of Drag shows just how diverse, brilliant, and accepting this world can be. And my dears, it's only just the beginning!
So let's keep shining those pink tutus bright! Donāt forget, we're going to keep spreading those drag vibes far and wide. We've only just begun to understand what it means to be truly fabulous!
Don't forget to check out the latest Drag Queens on the scene in our āQueens to Watchā section on our website! And most importantly, donāt be afraid to rock your pink tutu! Because every day can be a drag day, honey!
Your pink tutu loving friend, Emma
