Pink-Tutu Presents: Post #1659 - March 2058: Drag Travels in Time!

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveller. Welcome to another post on pink-tutu.com. It’s March 2058, and let me tell you, my travels this month have been utterly spectacular! I've hopped through the centuries, witnessed incredible performances, and let me tell you, the world of drag is more dazzling than ever!

I landed first in glorious, technicolour London, 1988, which, my darlings, was practically dripping with the fabulousness of a well-applied highlighter! The streets were brimming with drag queens serving serious attitude and an array of outlandish outfits, and I was particularly smitten by the '80s style: lots of leg, sparkly leotards and the boldest shoulder pads I've ever seen.

It felt so right to twirl onto the scene in my own pink tutu, of course, a delicate confection of feather boas and diamantés that caught the eye of a drag queen who seemed just as fascinated by my pinkness as I was by the entire London drag scene.

Her name was Ginger Snaps - she told me she was part of a drag collective called "The Glam Rockets", a bunch of flamboyant, energetic queens known for their daring dance numbers. Their passion for the art form and their ability to pack out a venue were so infectious I practically danced with joy the whole evening.

I'd just begun to think about joining the Glam Rockets for their finale number (after all, who can resist a good shimmy on stage?) when my trusty pink tutu began to twinkle! Suddenly, I was swept up in a kaleidoscope of swirling pink and found myself amidst a bustling marketplace in Tangier, Morocco, in 2034.

Now, imagine this, darlings: the souks of Tangier, overflowing with colours, smells and the most fantastic traditional textiles. Amidst the bustling crowd, I discovered an exciting drag scene with a distinct North African vibe, mixing local fashion with vibrant, global influences.

One particularly lovely queen, who I chatted with over a delicious cup of mint tea, told me that a new generation of young queens were drawing on their heritage for inspiration, combining traditional Moroccan garments with sequins, shimmering fabrics, and theatrical makeup for truly unique and striking performances.

This blending of traditional and modern elements in drag is such an inspiring development. You know I always preach that drag is a universal language that transcends geographical boundaries, and the queens in Tangier proved to me just that! The blending of cultures and styles really reminded me of the strength of a drag queen’s power of creation.

After a delicious Tagine dinner and an enthralling "burlesque cabaret" featuring amazing acrobatic acts and dazzling costumes, my tutu began its dance once more. This time I landed right in the heart of the Tokyo drag scene of 2050.

If you can imagine the extravagance of Tokyo's fashion and the audacity of the avant-garde, you’re starting to get a picture. I was amazed by the use of technology in drag. It was futuristic but feminine! Think 3-D printed garments, holographic makeup, and even holograms projecting custom designed scenes on stage.

There was a group of K-Pop inspired queens - so stylish! – who brought a pop-art style to drag. They wore the most amazing vibrant and bold outfits. Their music, choreographed moves, and high-energy shows are quite simply spectacular!

Tokyo’s drag scene was incredibly diverse. Queens came from all walks of life, blending futuristic styles with elements from traditional Japanese theatre for a dynamic and innovative visual feast. It was an extraordinary sight and definitely the most high-tech drag I’ve ever encountered!

Now, back to reality after these dazzling time travel excursions. But my dear readers, there's no place like the real world of 2058. I just returned from an extraordinary event held in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District that celebrated the 200th Anniversary of *"The Big Pink Tutu Ball." * Imagine, 200 years of this magnificent celebration of all things fabulous and feminine!

It's hard to believe how far drag has come. In 2058, it’s a truly global phenomenon, from the glitter-strewn dance floors of the West to the bustling souks of the East, and we’ve evolved alongside fashion itself. It’s inspiring how drag, once seen as a counter-cultural statement, has become mainstream, yet retains that rebellious, creative spirit.

This incredible evolution hasn’t come easily, and that is why this month, I've decided to focus my attention on promoting and supporting the drag scene across all of our global communities, no matter their cultural backgrounds. There's something truly unique and beautiful about celebrating individuality through the art of drag!

Now, before I say "farewell" (and my oh my, it is nearly time for tea), I want to urge all my darling readers, no matter where you live, to join in this celebration. Put on your most glamorous frock, find your nearest drag event, and dance your heart out. Don’t forget, it is all thanks to the queens that came before us - the ones who dared to push the boundaries, to celebrate diversity, and to bring a touch of outrageousness to this wonderful world. So let us embrace our individual stories, and never lose that fiery passion for performance and unstoppable fabulousness.

See you all soon,

Emma xx

P.S. Have you started planning your Easter Drag Brunch yet? Let's celebrate Spring in fabulous style, shall we?

Fashion Focus

Speaking of Spring! My fashion finds this month have been, as always, an absolute delight:

  • In London, 1988: My darling, how do they get the hair to stand like that?. It's like they used enough hairspray to rival an entire theatre company. It was a big statement! Think huge shoulders, neon colors, lots of sequins - pure eighties fabulousness! Let’s bring those amazing shoulder pads back!

  • In Tangier, 2034: A perfect blend of contemporary designs, vintage vibes, and rich cultural patterns. It was all about long skirts, embroidered kaftans, beautiful intricate jewelry, and a whole lot of colourful flair!

  • In Tokyo, 2050: Holographic dresses with flowing patterns that literally came to life in front of my eyes! So chic, so futuristic!

This Month’s Must-Have: A gorgeous, glittering headpiece - you can find some super beautiful ones at vintage shops, or online, but remember to give that piece of headwear all the drama it deserves!
