Oh, darling, what a glorious month of ballet it’s been! January is always such a decadent start to the year. The season’s a-buzz, and the theatres are abuzz with dazzling debuts, innovative creations, and legendary returns. Here's my insider's peek at what’s been thrilling me these last few weeks.

Paris, my Love

It wouldn't be January without a trip to Paris, would it? The OpĂ©ra Bastille truly knows how to begin the year with a flourish, launching with their spectacular production of Le Corsaire. It was sheer brilliance! This ballet always offers a feast for the eyes, and this staging did not disappoint. With costumes that could have been ripped from the pages of a lavish fashion magazine – I'm thinking full tulle skirts and beaded bodices, darling! – the visual spectacle was captivating. Of course, there was some stunning dancing, too, from the corps, with that exquisitely controlled and breathtaking precision I've always adored. And the pas de deux? Oh my word, they were simply divine!

Now, one wouldn't expect anything less from the legendary Manuel Legris, the exquisite artist he is. He's still got it, darlings, the graceful leaps, the beautiful line, and of course, those effortlessly beautiful port de bras. He is simply the definition of a consummate gentleman, and his acting is, dare I say, faultless.

The whole production had me wanting to just jump onto the stage and dance myself! However, you can’t be the beautiful swan and the ugly duckling all at the same time! Don’t worry, I held back! ?

Moscow: A Swan Song, But So Very Swan!

There's something rather magical about returning to the Bolshoi Theatre, the red velvet plush seats, and the gilded balconies, all adding to the drama and mystique of the performance. It's been decades since the legendary Maya Plisetskaya took the Bolshoi stage in her unforgettable interpretation of Swan Lake, but the legacy lives on. The current incarnation is something to be cherished, I assure you!

Svetlana Zakharova, her form so lithe and supple, is a veritable angel in the role. Her iconic transformation, from naive innocence to the dark and sensual Black Swan, is truly a triumph. Every move is filled with meaning, with power and beauty.

I couldn't take my eyes off of her for a second – she simply stole the show! Her performance is an incredible feat of artistry. Every step is so controlled, every gesture so deliberate. You’d never catch this dancer being less than completely committed to her craft, and the dedication she brings to every role is simply remarkable.

Zakharova's Prince, a charming and masterful dancer, seemed a bit subdued in comparison. He may be incredibly technically sound, with dazzling leaps and an excellent classical style, but it’s not enough, darlings! You want passion and an underlying vulnerability alongside his technical prowess. And those two things, my dears, weren’t present enough. I did feel a pang of pity for his lackluster efforts.

But then, you know, Zakharova’s breathtaking artistry stole the show, as it does in all of her performances. It was a pure delight to see this iconic ballet brought to life by such an incredible talent.

The New Wave in London

The Royal Ballet continues to be at the forefront of the modern dance scene. The newest creation by Wayne McGregor, “The Dante Project,” is a visual feast, challenging yet compelling. I loved the exploration of themes of love, loss, and longing - dark, complex themes handled beautifully! This ballet is like a visual poem, each move building upon the last, a cascade of elegant emotion. It's utterly fascinating, and frankly, it really does push the boundaries of what one might expect from ballet.

Of course, it wasn't all smooth sailing, with moments of discomfort that are undeniably a part of McGregor’s vision and aesthetic. There were a few “challenging” choreographic elements that made the old dear rather uncomfortable, and quite honestly, I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about them. There are these, well, dare I say, "out of place" dance moments that were completely baffling. Even with the stunning choreography, the artistic freedom given to dancers here can lead to what feels like random, unnecessary, jarring movement – moments where my mind just couldn’t grasp their purpose. But I know, of course, there are always some who will applaud this unfettered approach. The real art in these challenging moves is how well each performer makes these transitions believable and visually stunning.

It takes a lot of talent and courage to tackle a piece like this. There is always that fear of "what if?" that haunts one, wondering what people are really thinking. Of course, we must give them all the credit for their dedication and commitment to presenting such an intricate, thought-provoking, and ambitious piece! My admiration goes to McGregor’s dancers who executed this piece with so much technical virtuosity. You couldn’t fault their performances!

Dancing on Air in New York

Oh, dear New York, so busy and bustling. But there is always time for a bit of ballet, don't you know! The New York City Ballet, a constant source of brilliance, presented an entirely different kind of experience - a production of George Balanchine’s "Symphony in C". It's a classic, of course, but the way the current dancers perform it is a revelation, quite the refreshing and vibrant take on it all.

It's almost as if you could see their enthusiasm radiating from the stage – their youthful vigor and boundless energy infused a freshness into this enduring piece. Every moment in the performance, especially in the first movement, is one to savor. You'll want to grab every moment of it to keep it within your memory forever, a kaleidoscope of movement. You have to admire how well these dancers master these incredible dance formations; the ensemble work was stunning!

Each dancer is captivatingly distinct yet, they seem so seamlessly intertwined; a perfect blend of graceful unison with every step they take! A ballet full of joy, the kind that simply lights up your soul.

Across the Globe

As we’ve seen, there are so many interesting productions across the globe, and these are just a handful of what’s taking place in the world of ballet.

  • **Australia** - From what I hear from my stylish contacts down under, Sydney’s "Giselle" was exquisite! The vibrant company and their dancers, darling, their energy is simply phenomenal,
  • **Tokyo** – Now you know how much I adore ballet, but there are things one can tolerate in these international productions, such as the occasional costume misstep, and you do wonder why a little attention to detail is lacking, sometimes, especially for an event as elaborate and refined as the art of ballet! There was, in particular, an incident with the costume department during a "Swan Lake" in Tokyo. But I will be very vague on that topic as there are no more details on it right now.
  • **Madrid** - A simply breathtaking interpretation of “Romeo and Juliet", a visual masterpiece.

If I've learnt anything this month, dear, it’s that the ballet scene is booming all over the world, bursting with new ideas, exciting revivals and talent from all four corners. So be sure to catch these gems while you can! From innovative works by visionary choreographers to breathtaking performances by world-renowned dancers, this month was absolutely breathtaking, a symphony of talent and passion, bringing the ballet scene to life.

I do hope you enjoy, darlings. See you at the theatre soon, perhaps a new production of "Sleeping Beauty" - there’s talk of a new interpretation from one of our beloved dance companies!

Until next time, remember: Dance, darlings, dance!
