Darling, September has been absolutely divine! It's the season for dazzling new tutus, and oh my, have we been spoilt for choice! It’s all about romanticism this month, but let’s be frank - what else is new? There was simply a glorious feast for the eyes!
Oh Darling, What A Tutus!
- The Royal Ballet opened its season with a stunning production of "Giselle" featuring the most delicious romantic tutus – wispy layers of tulle in pale moonlit shades of silver and oyster. The ethereal look of Giselle's second act was truly the epitome of ballerina chic.
- Across town at the Sadler's Wells Theatre, Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake" presented tutus with a touch of the dark and dangerous. Those feathered, black tutus on the male swans? Simply devastating! Bourne really knows how to turn a traditional look on its head and make it even more glamorous. A truly chic reinterpretation!
- Then there was the English National Ballet with their production of "Swan Lake" which boasted some particularly elegant traditional tutus with such glorious extensions. One can always rely on them to put on a show that celebrates the classic, with an element of extravagance, but also stays within those established traditions. Absolutely divine.
- The Royal Opera House also played host to the spectacular "La Bayadere", a real favourite of mine - where the beautiful tutus shimmered in emerald and amethyst - simply heavenly. The tutus, of course, were designed by Nikolai Benois, whose work has always captured the most dramatic and glorious elements of classic Russian design. And don’t get me started on the costume detailing!
As the air chills, we can all dream of being swept off our feet by some breathtaking ballet fashion, but just make sure that you put aside those classic designs. One just can’t go wrong!
