A Season of Stars, from London to Moscow: The Dance Diary of December 2008
As the crisp winter air bites and the city lights twinkle with festive cheer, so too do the world's stages come alive with the enchantment of dance. December, a month where tradition intertwines with artistic brilliance, offered a breathtaking spectacle of ballet from London's regal elegance to Moscow's bold dynamism.
Royal Balletās Swan Lake
Letās face it, a Christmas season is hardly complete without seeing The Royal Ballet's "Swan Lake". Now in its 20th year, the performance still captures audiences with its hauntingly beautiful tale. Tamara Rojo's performance as Odette/Odile, however, was particularly captivating, blending exquisite technique with an intensity that brought tears to my eyes. The ethereal lightness of her swan movements contrasted beautifully with the regal fierceness of the black swan, a portrayal so vivid it practically danced off the stage. It was, without question, one of those rare evenings where every note, every gesture felt perfectly aligned. A poignant moment: watching the audience, aghast, as the prince finally realises the depth of Odette's heartbreak, and, in turn, we witness their devastating love story play out in the final, tragic scene. A must-see for any true dance aficionado.
Birmingham Royal Balletās āThe Nutcrackerā
Birmingham Royal Ballet has made "The Nutcracker" an annual tradition. Their version is like stepping into a shimmering Victorian Christmas card: full of sugar plum delights and whimsical charm. This yearās Clara, a young dancer with a delicate elegance, shone brightly, capturing our attention with her wide-eyed wonder. While the Sugar Plum Fairy, a vision of classic grace and refinement, had the audience sighing in delight with every pirouette. "The Nutcracker" isn't simply a ballet; it's an experience that evokes pure childhood joy, with each scene cleverly designed to transport us to a world where anything is possible.
The Bolshoi Balletās "Don Quixote"
Next, a flight to Moscow, where the Bolshoi Ballet continued to defy expectations with its production of "Don Quixote". Now, you'd think a story about a lovelorn knight would feel a little old-fashioned, wouldn't you? Well, this production felt as vibrant and dynamic as the heart of Moscow itself. The energetic choreography showcased a power and athleticism that left me breathless, while the humorous undertones added a layer of unexpected warmth to the story.
āSleeping Beauty" - A Modern Twist
But for something a little bolder, "Sleeping Beauty", performed by The Hamburg Ballet, provided a contemporary re-imagining of this timeless fairy tale. Gone were the frilly tutus, replaced with sharp lines and contemporary costumes. But donāt think for a second this was a loss: this production felt vibrant, relevant, and even thrillingly dangerous, keeping us guessing until the very last note. It is a bold approach for a classical story, however itās one I felt completely engrossed in.
Royal Balletās New Generation
Back in London, The Royal Balletās "New Generation" presented a thrilling showcase of up-and-coming talent, where youthful exuberance danced alongside exceptional artistry. These are dancers whose star is about to burst, each brimming with unique expressions. Watching these young artists perform was to witness not simply steps, but raw emotion and artistic commitment, captivating the audience with their captivating passion and impressive technical prowess. It was inspiring to witness such youthful enthusiasm and artistry - truly a performance brimming with potential.
A Dance with the Future: "Swan Lakeā in New York
On the other side of the Atlantic, New York City Ballet continues to push boundaries. The premiere of a contemporary interpretation of "Swan Lake" proved an exceptional experience, leaving audiences awestruck. The choreographer reinterpreted the classical tale, while staying faithful to its essence, exploring a more psychological depth and showcasing an understanding of the power of classical movement.
The International Scene: The Rise of Dance in the Orient
As always, the dance scene is truly global. My eyes were captivated by performances by a new breed of Japanese contemporary ballet dancers. It felt like a perfect blend of Eastern grace with the West's emotional and theatrical dynamism, a truly unique combination. One could see that these artists have a vision that blends tradition with exciting innovation, resulting in works of great beauty and cultural resonance.
Dancing into the Holidays
A ballet performance is truly a delightful way to celebrate the holidays. This month has been packed with productions that have kept the stage glowing with the brilliance of talent, while reminding us of the enduring appeal of classical ballet, its endless possibilities and its ever-evolving language. These productions have reminded us why this form of art will forever enchant. With new talent rising across the world, dance is reaching new audiences, finding exciting ways to remain relevant. As December ends, the festive glow will fade, but the artistry and the power of dance will live on. I canāt wait for the magic that 2009 brings to the stages around the world.
