Darling, the season has just begun, and what a fabulous one it promises to be! From the grand opulence of Paris’ Palais Garnier to the raw, heart-stopping power of Moscow's Bolshoi, ballet’s glittering constellations have aligned for an autumn brimming with bold, brilliant, and sometimes, even shocking, performances.

A Parisienne Dream: Elegance and Enchantment at the Opéra Garnier

Paris, my dearest, always exudes a certain Je ne sais quoi! This year, the Palais Garnier took us back to the golden age of classical ballet with their stunning revival of "La Bayadùre." This exquisite staging transported us to a sublime kingdom of Oriental dreams. The corps de ballet danced with mesmerizing precision, forming mesmerizing arabesques as if born from the silk of a Persian tapestry. Of course, we mustn’t forget our beloved stars! Natalia Osipova, radiant as the celestial Nikiya, exuded an almost ethereal quality, every turn a dazzling spectacle. She soared, her feet tracing exquisite arabesques that seemed to defy gravity, her movements both graceful and full of inner strength. And then there was the breathtaking Vadim Muntagirov as Solor, a Prince so dashing and romantic. Oh, their pas de deux was a masterpiece of passion, love, and tragic destiny.

The Bolshoi: From Darkness to Light

It’s always an adventure in Moscow. This September, the Bolshoi took us on a journey to the very depths of human emotions with a captivating production of “The Sleeping Beauty.” Under the masterful direction of Alexei Ratmansky, the choreography was bold, explosive, almost a reimagining of the classic, which gave a modern edge to this timeless tale. Olga Smirnova, a young ballerina whose talent is as fiery as her spirit, embraced the role of Aurora with both regal elegance and captivating vulnerability. Her dancing was a revelation! One moment, she was a fragile princess, the next a storm of emotion as she danced with the depth and emotional intensity of an experienced prima ballerina. Her choreographic partnership with the wonderfully dashing Vladislav Lantratov as Prince DĂ©sirĂ©, was truly mesmerising.

New York's Dazzling Debut: A Symphony of Modernity

Ah, New York City! Always the heartbeat of innovation. The City Ballet debuted a new piece by Justin Peck, “The Man who Danced with the Stars”, that has the city talking. The concept, a futuristic vision where the line between reality and dream becomes blurry, was daring and enthralling, pushing the boundaries of ballet in a new and compelling direction. The choreography was incredibly inventive, incorporating modern elements with the elegance and fluidity of classic ballet. The costumes by the acclaimed designer Sarah Burton were stunning! They combined futuristic lines with a hint of retro elegance that evoked the spirit of the iconic New York style.

The London Royal Ballet's Tribute: Reliving the Past, Creating a New Legacy

The Royal Ballet has always had a deep connection to the past. In a touching homage, the company performed a gala celebrating Frederick Ashton's works, showcasing his masterful choreography and the ever-lasting legacy of British Ballet. Darcey Bussell, the graceful goddess of ballet herself, returned to the stage, a poignant tribute to the grand tradition of British ballet with a stunning rendition of "Marguerite and Armand" alongside the elegant and charming Steven McRae.

The evening sparkled with brilliant talent, the ever-so-talented Marianela Nuñez and the captivating Edward Watson brought an electrifying performance of "Façade." The audience erupted in applause, acknowledging the remarkable talent that was showcased.

From the West End to the City Lights: An Evening of Musical Storytelling

A touch of magic, a hint of drama and a dash of romance: these are the hallmarks of the world's most famous stage - the West End. This season saw the return of “The Phantom of the Opera”. A dazzling performance that reminded me why this classic has held its place as a theatre gem for years. And of course, we couldn't have the West End without “Billy Elliott," a production that takes us on a heart-warming journey of dreams, hope, and finding yourself. These iconic productions showcase the versatility and emotional power of the theatre arts, captivating audiences worldwide.

From the heart of New York to the dazzling stage of the Bolshoi, ballet's international landscape is filled with captivating stories and a symphony of talent. The dance world is vibrant and energetic, always evolving and adapting, making every season a truly thrilling experience.
