Oh darling! What a dazzling start to the year! January has seen a flurry of feathers, a tempest of tutus and a whole lot of high kicks. Let's dive in, shall we, and discuss the creme de la creme of the ballet world's offerings, from London to New York, Paris to Moscow, and everywhere in between.
London's Leading Lights
Let's begin, naturally, with the grand old dame of the British ballet scene - the Royal Ballet. The opening night of their production of "Giselle" was positively divine! Darling, it's a classic for a reason, but this time around, Natalia Osipova, who can really move a leg, brought a heart-wrenching intensity to the role. The crowd went absolutely bonkers. My personal favourite part was the "mad scene," when she literally embodied the tortured soul of a betrayed lover. The Royal Opera House has never seen such raw emotion, darlings.
Now, the English National Ballet. You see, dear readers, I am a huge fan of their "The Nutcracker" every year. However, this year they threw a bit of a curveball. They brought in Wayne McGregor, who is undeniably the king of contemporary ballet these days. His "Chroma" is truly magnificent. This innovative choreography - with its pulsating rhythms, sleek lines and stark imagery, transported me to a completely different world. Not your traditional fairy tale ballet, but certainly a must-see!
And just as the London Ballet world is beginning to find its rhythm, here comes "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Matthew Bourne, a man with an utterly whimsical and wonderfully dark vision. Performed at the Sadler's Wells, his production was nothing short of a triumph! This imaginative take on Shakespeare, complete with feathered sprites and mischievous fairies, delighted the audience and reminded us of ballet's limitless capacity to interpret stories in its unique language. Darling, you just had to be there to witness the sheer joy and artistry on display!
Across the Pond
Now, let's take a little flight across the Atlantic to New York. The New York City Ballet's rendition of "Swan Lake" was the talk of the town. Darling, Tiler Peck, who embodies the very essence of grace and poise, gave us a performance that simply stole our hearts. It's amazing what a little elegance can do! I adore her artistry - she's not just dancing, she's telling a story through every gesture, every movement. Simply brilliant.
Of course, the American Ballet Theatre can never be overlooked! They unveiled a new work by Alexei Ratmansky, a name that is making waves in the international ballet world. His "The Bright Stream," set in a Russian countryside full of vibrant colours and catchy tunes, was surprisingly enchanting. It was the perfect blend of classic storytelling and contemporary sensibilities.
A Parisian Waltz
Then there's Paris, my darling, the city of love and of course, of exquisite ballet! The Opéra de Paris delivered yet another masterpiece with "La Bayadère," an opulent spectacle full of stunning sets and a heartbreaking love story. You see, the costumes alone, oh darling, were worthy of a museum! Imagine silks and satins and shimmering gems flowing around the stage like a river of enchantment. And then, to top it all off, the corps de ballet danced with such incredible precision that they practically defied the laws of physics. Perfection.
A Russian Rhapsody
And finally, let's touch down in Moscow. This month saw the Bolshoi Theatre hosting the premiere of a ballet inspired by the works of Tchaikovsky. Yes, another Russian genius! This was an audacious endeavor, but you know, sometimes the bravest are rewarded with the most glorious of outcomes. The Bolshoi's "Tchaikovsky Symphony in E Flat Major, Op. 64 (Pathétique)" is pure beauty, an artistic celebration of music and dance.
New Blood
I'm not forgetting the upcoming generation of dancers! Oh, darling, I recently attended a gala at the School of American Ballet, showcasing the very best young talents. What breathtaking skill, such raw potential! It was a delightful glimpse into the future of this art form.
