Ballet Bonanza: A Whirlwind of December Delights
Darlings,
As the festive season approaches and the air crackles with a hint of frost, the ballet world is buzzing with activity. A truly glittering array of productions are taking centre stage across the globe, promising a sumptuous feast for the senses. Let us, therefore, dive right in and explore the delights of December’s ballet offerings.
London Calling: A Triumph of the Classics
First, a quick hop over to London’s Covent Garden. This month, the Royal Opera House is ablaze with the magic of Christmas. Their annual Nutcracker production is simply divine, the lavish sets and costumes an exquisite homage to the season’s charm. This year, however, there was a new name to be savoured – emerging star, Amelia Hope, delivered a captivating portrayal of Clara. With her delicate elegance and impeccable technique, she was an absolute revelation, weaving her magic with both enchanting grace and technical mastery.
And what of the iconic ‘Swan Lake?’ This month has witnessed the return of our darling Margot Fonteyn, in her breathtaking role of Odette/Odile. One cannot help but be utterly captivated by her haunting portrayal of both innocent Swan and treacherous Black Swan. It was a triumph for the ages! I’m thrilled she was willing to step back onto the stage to grace us with her magnificent talent, she continues to be one of the most gifted and ethereal ballerinas of our time.
But, as with every Christmas, there's also something wonderfully naughty tucked away. This December, the English National Ballet is throwing a tantalising party in the form of ‘La Fille Mal Gardée.’ This witty romp is full of charm, showcasing a wonderfully eclectic blend of high energy leaps and captivating comedic moments. And who could forget that playful ‘clog dance?’ Absolutely brilliant, darling!
Parisian Chic: A Flirty Dance With Modernity
Let’s jet across the Channel, darling, to the romantic capital, Paris! The Opéra Garnier, with its ornate interior, always guarantees a lavish experience. And this month, the étoile Marie-Agnès Gillot brought the magic of ‘Giselle’ back to life. I found myself quite captivated by her portrayal of the innocent, lovelorn village girl. She exudes fragility, but her dance is pure strength. I’m quite taken with her.
Then there’s the Palais Garnier, a true temple of art. And what could be more fitting than to celebrate their stunning art deco architecture with a little artistic rebellion. The company, Ballet Preljocaj, is making waves with its bold production, ‘La Stravaganza.’ Forget your tutu and pointe shoes, darling! This one takes you on a fascinating journey with innovative movement and breathtakingly minimalist stage design. It's a modern interpretation, full of attitude and, well, extravagance, of course. It truly is avant-garde.
Beyond the Usual: Unconventional Wonders
Let's venture out of Europe, across the Atlantic to New York, a city that pulsates with an endless desire for innovation. The American Ballet Theatre is truly on fire this month. They're shaking things up with the world premiere of a new work by Alexei Ratmansky called “The Gift of the Magi.” With its contemporary interpretation of O. Henry's short story, this performance delves deep into love and sacrifice with a beautiful blend of lyrical movement and dramatic storytelling. It's truly a masterpiece of its own!
From New York, let us head South to San Francisco, a city renowned for its artistic daring. The San Francisco Ballet is breaking all the rules with its staging of ‘An Evening With Balanchine,’ a daringly original program showcasing Balanchine’s legendary choreography. This month’s program delved into the genius of this iconic choreographer. A daringly unconventional showcase of modern dance, it promises to challenge conventional perceptions, darling.
Finally, let's escape the confines of Western culture. Let us head to Kyoto, a city that resonates with tradition, grace, and delicate beauty. Here, the celebrated Kyogen Ensemble is showcasing the poignant narrative of the ‘Snow Maiden.’ With delicate movements and ethereal costumes, they deliver a mesmerising performance rooted in tradition and brimming with a mystical, otherworldly charm.
A Festive Endnote
There you have it, my dears. This month’s ballet scene is overflowing with a delightful blend of the familiar and the unexpected. From dazzling renditions of the classics to edgy avant-garde creations, the stage is set for an unforgettable season of dance. Now, grab your dancing shoes and your warmest winter coat – it’s time to enjoy the festive ballet magic!
With much love,
Your ever devoted,
Isabella
