Pink Tutu Travels - Blog Post #128: A Royal Ballet Birthday!

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, where we pirouette through time and uncover the enchanting world of ballet! I'm Emma, your pink-clad time-travelling ballerina, and I'm so excited to share with you my adventures from a very special day - August 8th, 1671!

As always, my trusty steed, Magic Meg - a shimmeringly pink Shire horse with golden hooves and a flowing mane like spun moonlight - was ready for a journey! My sequined pink tutu swished around me as we galloped through the cobbled streets, the sound of the clip-clopping hooves almost drowning out the merry tinkling of my heart.

Today's destination was a very exciting one: Paris, the heart of the French court. August 8th marked a very special birthday - the King's birthday, Louis XIV, to be precise. And I couldn't resist the allure of celebrating a birthday in such a glamorous location, could I?

After a quick gallop across the English Channel (Magic Meg, my dear, what would I do without you?), we arrived at the Château de Fontainebleau, a majestic castle that would make even the most elaborate ballet set look like a child's plaything. And there, before me, was a spectacle of French elegance.

"L'Académie Royale de Danse," - the royal dance academy - was presenting a lavish birthday performance in honour of the King, complete with all the courtly finery I could ever imagine. From elaborate, jeweled costumes to exquisitely embroidered shoes, every detail was dripping in baroque grandeur. It was quite frankly, utterly enchanting!

The performance itself was nothing short of incredible. Imagine, a grand, choreographed celebration, with music, dance, and drama weaving a story of heroism and chivalry - a ballet set in the royal court. The performers, so expertly trained and beautifully adorned, embodied characters both bold and delicate. They truly brought the story to life, with each movement speaking volumes, each leap a celebration of grace and skill.

Of course, I wasn't one to just stand and watch. The opportunity to mingle with such illustrious dance royalty was far too exciting to resist! I introduced myself as a ballerina from the future (and received some very curious stares) - but what can you do, eh? Then, I ventured to speak with a few of the academy’s students. Imagine - they were training with the most celebrated dance masters of their time! We discussed technique, style, and even - imagine this, darling - the early development of pointe shoes!

While still in its infancy, it was so exciting to see these first pointe shoes being used. They looked almost alien compared to the pointe shoes of today, and while they might not have the same graceful, almost delicate form, the sheer invention and audacity behind them blew me away! My mind was positively bursting with ideas - how to improve, modify, create a new pink pointe shoe that would have the perfect blend of historical elegance and modern finesse!

Oh, the tales and treasures I gleaned from this day - from stories of the King’s affection for ballet to glimpses of the most iconic costumes - each anecdote a delicate pink feather added to my already overflowing backpack. And wouldn't you know it, I even found an incredible old ballet poster from that night - a real collectors’ piece! Now that will look beautiful displayed in my Pink Tutu boutique, don’t you think?

After the performance, I made sure to savour every moment. I indulged in a delectable feast fit for a princess - delicate pastries, savoury dishes, and of course, wine that sparkled with a delicious pink hue!

Later, I took a leisurely stroll through the cobblestone streets of the nearby village, mesmerised by the charming architecture and vibrant life surrounding me. This was true Parisian magic, a magical place full of beauty, grace, and joy - it was no wonder Louis XIV made it his capital.

As always, I’m sure you’re dying to know: What have I brought back to Derbyshire with me from my adventure?

Well, this time, it’s a very special item: a magnificent pink velvet waistcoat! Imagine it, darling! I plan on creating my own "Pink Tutu Ensemble" for future time travels. You know I can't resist the opportunity to wear the most fabulous costumes in history. After all, one must never shy away from expressing their love for all things pink, darling! Don't you agree?
