Hello darlings! Welcome back to my Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog! I’m Emma, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina blogger, straight from the Derbyshire hills, with a passion for pink tutus, ballet history, and the occasional time travel adventure aboard my sparkling pink steed, Magic Meg. This month, we’re stepping back in time to August 08, 1706, to witness a momentous occasion – the French Court Ballet. And oh my, let me tell you, it’s as opulent and spectacular as a dazzling tutu!
You know, we girls adore a bit of grandeur, right? So imagine my delight at stepping out of Magic Meg's saddle, my tulle skirt billowing like a delicate cloud, right into the heart of the French court at Versailles. The opulence is simply breathtaking! My eyes widened as they took in the extravagant tapestry, the shimmering chandeliers, the ornate costumes, and the ladies sporting towering hairstyles fit for a queen. I'd say this is the ultimate ballet experience!
It's truly enchanting. I mean, how could you resist being whisked away to a world of intricate choreography, exquisite music, and stunning visual displays? And today, the French Court is showcasing the talents of their very own ballet master, Pierre Beauchamp. He’s an absolute star in this era – not only did he perform, but he also designed dances and set choreography standards for years to come.
In my leather rucksack, nestled amidst the delicate antique fabric samples I’ve collected along the way, is a pamphlet about the Ballet du Roy. And just like today, there's a buzz around which choreographic styles and dancers will be performing. Now, this isn’t your ordinary, straightforward ballet, mind you. We're talking a spectacle with a touch of everything! The ballet performances often interweave poetry, singing, dancing, even acrobatic elements – they’re like a theatrical symphony of human artistry, which makes it all the more captivating.
This court ballet, specifically, celebrates the triumphant “Battle of Ramillies,” which cemented French dominance in the Low Countries – a significant victory indeed! It seems every single event, big or small, in this era had a grand balletic spectacle, a way to capture the essence of that event. Talk about showing off your cultural and artistic skills!
As a time-travelling ballerina, it's my mission to encourage a bit more “tutu” in this era, even in history’s grand moments. My rucksack is bursting with shimmering ribbons and my beloved tutu patterns, and I must confess, I had a vision of those dancers waltzing and pirouetting on that stage – with a bit of pink embellishment of course!
Can you imagine the grandeur of those historical costumes enhanced by a touch of the exquisite softness and grace of pink tulle? My mind reels at the thought! What a magical combination of history and modern dance aesthetics – oh, my! I think it would bring those ballets alive with a feminine touch and a playful dash of our current-day energy, wouldn't you agree?
But before we step into a world of pink tutus at Versailles, I want to talk about how this historical ballet paved the way for our ballet as we know it today! We're not just gazing at costumes and history here, ladies. These French court performances started transforming a social dancing spectacle into something that would evolve into the theatrical form we recognize today. They weren’t all perfectly disciplined, perfectly elegant movements. This period introduced new ideas about choreography, posture, and movement that we continue to cherish today. From grand jetés to elegant arabesques, it all started here. We owe so much to the beauty and refinement of these dances.
My latest tutu creations – “Timeless Grace,” and "Ethereal Bloom," draw inspiration from those ancient ballet steps, using airy tulle to capture the spirit of the time, combined with modern techniques and an irresistible dose of my favourite colour, pink.

But the real star, besides my Magic Meg, is my pink tutu! My trusty companion through the ages, bringing together dance history with modern style, allowing me to bring my dreams to life! Oh, darling, let’s dream big together, let’s dream pink!
Yours truly,
Emma xx
