Hello, darling ballet bunnies! Emma here, back from another fab time travel adventure! I've just popped back from February the 2nd, 1712, and let me tell you, the past is utterly bonkers when it comes to fashion and the ballet! 🩰
It's not just me who loves the pink tutu! Back then, tutus were in, and let me tell you, they were HUGE! It was quite a sight to behold - the skirts of these ballerinas were like gigantic clouds of tulle, perfect for swirling around and twirling on stage. And all of them? Well, I counted five - absolutely rocking those pinks! From blush to rose to, my absolute favourite, a beautifully faded, slightly muted pink that was just perfection. A bit like my favourite ballerina, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, only this wasn’t a Disney princess. It was a ballet performer who danced at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, and boy, she danced with a spirit that you rarely see!
This trip was an absolute joy, not least because of my beloved steed, Magic Meg. Imagine the sight! A shimmeringly pink shire, golden hooves glistening, white mane and tail streaming like a cloud – an absolute dream! My favourite shade of pink, shimmering as we galloped across the fields. I’d just popped to a little village in Derbyshire - a long ride, but worth every trot, darling. On my back, of course, my trusty leather rucksack. Every trip yields so many stories and bits and bobs that I just have to keep safe - imagine what a delightful treasure trove it’ll be for my future pink-tutu wearing descendants! I always make sure to wear my most beautiful pink tulle when I'm traveling back through the ages! I think my time travel companion thinks I’m quite a sight too.
As for February the 2nd, 1712, in the world of ballet? Well, it's hard to say, honestly. This was right back before things really started moving, before ballet as we know it today came into being, before those lovely theatrical productions and spectacular stage shows. It's important to understand that even the dance at this point was really just starting to emerge. Even though the dance moves are a long way off from the elegance of today’s dancers, there were early forms of ballets developing at the French court, and this particular day is just bursting with excitement.
Speaking of excitement - who needs a big theatrical performance? The highlight of this time period, however, was all about opera. Opera, darling, was huge! And if we're talking tutus in Paris, oh my word - it’s like you stepped straight onto the set of a spectacular production! All around Paris, they were creating dances that made you just want to twirl and whirl. There was dancing galore. Think ballet - but the stories weren’t quite as intricate as they’ve become. Think about it. Imagine dance shows as we know them – the elegant ballet shoes, graceful limbs, those magnificent sets. At the moment? These stories in motion were still developing. So - even if I can't talk about big grand ballet shows with tutus twirling everywhere – it is incredible to see that this is the beginning of something quite special, and it's already on its way to being truly extraordinary.
Now, don’t you dare think you’re not going to see me, my darling little ballerina bunny friends, in my beautiful pink tulle, just bursting with delight to be back. I always make a splash whenever I time-travel - so expect another fab post soon - you wouldn’t believe what I’m going to reveal this time!
Have you been to the opera recently? It’s a lovely way to appreciate the origins of dance - and who knows, darling? Maybe I'll meet you there!

PS If you're after a truly lovely ballerina-themed time travel book for yourself, I’ve been reading "The Time Traveller's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger – the ballet element may be missing, but the stories are definitely worth the read. And you'll feel those fluttery pink tutu feels for sure! 😉
