Ballet Time Travels: Post #1185 - A Night At The Opera With Marie Antoinette!

Hello, my dearest Tutu-licious friends! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where ballet reigns supreme, and pink tutus are the ultimate fashion statement. It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood ballet time traveller, and today we're heading back to September 9th, 1759! Buckle up your sparkly shoes and hold onto your tiaras, because this adventure is about to get regal!

Now, let's chat about my outfit for this escapade, shall we? My go-to pink tutu, a delicate confection of tulle and silk, felt absolutely fitting for the grandeur of the time. I even added a touch of baroque flair with a lace-trimmed bodice, evoking the exquisite fashion of the era.

Magic Meg, my trusty pink-hued Shire steed, who truly embodies the glamour of time travel, is adorned with a silver and pearl bridle, sparkling like the moonlight on a frozen lake. It's amazing what a good coat of pink shimmer spray and some ribbon can do for a magnificent animal. As for my back, my trusty leather rucksack is laden with ballet curios from the period – you just never know what gems you'll find hidden in history!

Now, where in the world of ballet did our time machine, I mean, Magic Meg, deposit us this month? Why, none other than the heart of the French court in Paris! Can you imagine, a glimpse into the life of Marie Antoinette herself?! I nearly fainted with excitement!

You see, 1759 marked the birth of Pierre Gardel - the French composer and dance master! Now, before you say 'oh, another ballet maestro', let me tell you about Pierre's importance. He is famed for creating ballets for the court in Vienna, Prague, and later, Paris! He actually became the leading dance master for the king and queen! You can imagine, performing for them - the privilege! Just imagining it sends a thrill of excitement down my spine.

And, guess what? I got to witness a ballet performance at the very theatre where he performed! My heart soared as the beautiful ballerinas twirled and danced, their costumes a swirl of colour, their movements imbued with the refined grace of the time.

The sheer elegance of the ballet hall, with its gilded balconies and crystal chandeliers, truly evoked a world of opulence and artistic refinement. Just try to imagine, all those fabulous costumes, the beautiful ladies of the court in their powder and jewels - I even spotted a couple of gentlemen in extravagant powdered wigs! It was such an eye-opening experience for a fashion fanatic like myself!

And the stories I heard! About the court's love of ballet, and the extravagant dances that would be staged for royalty, you just couldn’t imagine the incredible costumes and decorations that they used. My little heart nearly burst with the stories.

And you know me, my dear ballet lovers! I wasn’t just there to spectate. I found myself waltzing through the glittering corridors of Versailles, feeling like a royal princess! The experience was positively enchanting - and let's be honest, any excuse for a twirl in my pink tutu is a good one! I managed to snag a few sketches of the court fashion, and I’m thinking of bringing them back for inspiration on a new tutu line. I’m sure you will agree, the more sequins, the better! I am just dying to create a line of royal inspired tutus. I even caught a glimpse of Marie Antoinette's dress! Now, you all know my rule - always pink - and my, was that a beautiful shade of blush pink! I am obsessed! I’m thinking a blush pink tutu, edged with glittering sequins, might just be my new creation!

But even amidst the royal glamour, it wasn’t all champagne and glitter. There was also a great deal of savoir faire required. Ballet was a symbol of elegance and prestige, so the court demanded dancers to uphold a very high standard of performance and decorum! Imagine that, not a slight mistake - but absolutely nothing was ever going to get by them! My, what dedication to their craft. I would need to be extra mindful of that. The pressure to succeed, must have been intense, my dear friends! I salute those brave performers.

While our time travel adventure is over for now, I can't help but reflect on the incredible impact of the court's patronage on the development of ballet during that time. Just think, the ballet that we enjoy today wouldn't be the same without the grand productions and support of the French aristocracy. Isn't that fascinating?! We really have come so far as a society!

So there you have it, another fabulous journey through time, courtesy of yours truly! Keep your eyes peeled for my next post, which I promise, will be just as exciting! And remember, pink is the new black – so don’t be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina and step into a tutu of your own. Who knows what adventures might be waiting for you!

Until next time, stay tutu-licious!

Love, Emma xx
