Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller! 👋💖 December is in full swing, and it's officially the season for twirling and festive sparkle!
As we're in the month of magical twirls and festive magic, this month’s time travel adventure takes us all the way back to 12th December 1770, to the very heart of London, where the glittering world of ballet was captivating the court! 👑🩰
It’s a balmy December evening and as I perch atop Magic Meg, my dazzling pink shire horse with golden hooves and flowing white mane, the air is alive with anticipation. Meg whinnies softly, her pink shimmering coat reflecting the glow of London’s gaslights, as we make our way to the theatre.
My pink tutu is swirling in the wind, its tulle a symphony of delicate whispers as I glide towards my destination. We are headed to a royal ballet performance – the most talked-about event of the season! Imagine the excitement, darling! This evening, the best dancers from the Royal Ballet, the pinnacle of the performing arts in all of London, will be showcasing their artistry.
Before our journey, I always make sure to pack my trusty leather rucksack – brimming with beautiful silk scarves, ornate ribbons and anything else I might find myself wanting to bring back to the 21st century. Who knows what treasures this trip will offer? I can just picture the exquisite lace trim, or perhaps some antique jewellery that will make the perfect addition to my tutu collection. 💖
The Royal Opera House was built back in 1732, you know – talk about some beautiful historic architecture! A stunning red brick building with columns that reach towards the heavens, it stands as a testament to the artistry and grandeur of the 18th century. As I arrive at the grand entrance, the crowd buzzes with excitement, adorned in opulent gowns and fashionable waistcoats. It's a sight to behold!
There are a few differences between the dance styles of this era and today, you see, though you’ll recognize some familiar steps! Back then, the “ballet de cour,” the dance performed by the nobility, was filled with gracious promenades and elaborate bowing gestures. Everything was just so beautifully theatrical, like something straight out of a fairy tale!
I settle into my velvet-cushioned seat and my heart thunders with the anticipation. Soon, the lights dim and the stage comes alive with vibrant hues as the music swells.
Oh my! Tonight, a particularly charming gentleman, dressed in a dashing scarlet costume, stole my attention. His every step radiated a captivating intensity, as his hands spoke volumes, bringing forth a narrative through fluid movements and heartfelt expressions. The audience erupted into rapturous applause – even the King and Queen looked enthralled!
You see, the joy of ballet, its exquisite art form, has captivated hearts for centuries. It’s truly a testament to the universality of grace and beauty. It’s a reminder that, no matter the century, the passion for dance always finds a way to reach across time and connect souls.
As the last notes of the performance fade into the evening air, the crowd exits the theatre buzzing with admiration and excitement. I've already decided on a beautiful pink silk shawl from the vendors on the street outside to match my pink tutu! The air is fragrant with freshly baked pastries and spiced beverages – a truly wonderful way to end an evening of art and enchantment.
But of course, every time-traveling adventure leaves a piece of magic behind. On the 12th of December, 1770, as the audience was captivated by the artistry of the Royal Ballet, I find myself wanting to transport the enchanting essence of this night back to our time, where, with a touch of sparkle and a bit of magic, I believe the beauty of dance can transform the world, one pink tutu at a time.
