Hello, darling ballet lovers! It's your favourite pink tutu wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another adventure from the past! I just love how travelling through time lets me explore the magical world of ballet from different eras. And this month, we're hopping back to 4th April, 1781, a date that, you guessed it, involves ballet! 😉
Now, you might think this period wouldn't have much to offer in terms of the ballet world, but you'd be wrong, darlings! The world of dance is always bustling with activity, even back then. So, hop onto Magic Meg - my darling pink-sparkling shire horse with golden hooves and a white mane and tail – and let's take a peek into this fascinating time period together.
Before I set off on this month's adventure, I have to share the news from the wonderful world of ballet today. My favourite show is still on in London - 'Sleeping Beauty'! But this week I am taking a little trip down to Birmingham, darling, for the Royal Ballet's 'Swan Lake'. If you are in the vicinity, you must pop over and catch this absolutely dazzling production.
Right then, onto Magic Meg. Clackety-clack... We're off! Magic Meg is taking us right back to April 1781. Imagine, darling, no tutus with sparkles like the ones we have today! And not a single ballet slipper made from pointe! It's fascinating to imagine how they did it back then, isn't it?
So what was happening on this date? Let's peek into my trusty leather rucksack – always stocked full of interesting tidbits from each era I visit. Oh my, look what I've found! In 1781, the ballet world was seeing a beautiful blooming of new choreographers and, you guessed it, a new focus on technique. But I have to admit, it was nothing compared to the intricate, gravity defying pirouettes and grand jetés that we see today! Imagine how wonderful it must have been to see it develop over time, wouldn't it?
As I wander around the 18th-century streets of London (not even a thought of the tube back then, darlings!) I can practically hear the music. And you know, darlings, although it might have been simple by today’s standards, I bet the audiences back then loved it!
But the most thrilling find? A newly published essay, tucked away in a little book shop - the topic: "On the art of graceful movement, a tribute to the evolving artistry of ballet!". Isn't that just enchanting, darling? And you know, a part of me thinks there should be a modern day version for today.
Right then, darlings, I must be dashing off. Magic Meg is already rearing to get us back to the 21st century, but I just wanted to share the excitement and energy of the 4th of April, 1781, with all you lovely dancers out there!

Lots of love and sparkly pink kisses, Emma xx
P.S: Did you know that one of the biggest influences on 18th-century ballet was the development of the classical Italian ballet tradition? Fascinating stuff! The time travellers in me is bubbling to visit those eras next!
