Hello darlings, and welcome to another installment of your favourite ballet time-travel blog! It’s your girl Emma here, straight from a whirl in the world of 1861, and oh, my dears, what a festive flurry it was! Buckle up your pink tutus, because this month, we’re celebrating a Victorian Christmas with a ballet twist, so hold on to your tiaras, as we dive into December 12th, 1861!
As always, I woke up this morning in my little Derbyshire cottage, feeling like a ballerina about to pirouette onto a stage of magic. Magic Meg, my trusty pink, sparkly shire steed (don’t you love those golden hooves?) pawed impatiently outside, all set to whisk me away to the wonders of the past. My leather rucksack, crammed with ballet paraphernalia and my trusty notebook, was strapped onto my back, ready to capture every whimsical moment of my trip. Today, the stars aligned perfectly, and my trusty Magic Meg and I were going to experience a truly magical Christmas Eve!
Let’s set the scene, shall we? The snow was falling outside in soft, white flakes, painting the cobbled streets a dreamy, glistening canvas. It felt as though a thousand fairies were decorating the world, scattering glittering stardust on the frosted rooftops and sparkling on every icy branch. Every corner felt like a Christmas card, complete with snow-laden trees and cheerful lampposts spilling golden warmth onto the cobblestone streets. You just couldn't help but feel the festive magic hanging in the air!
My trusty Magic Meg and I found ourselves in London, at the theatre, my happy place! Imagine it - red velvet seats, sparkling chandeliers that cast intricate shadows, and the buzz of excitement echoing throughout the ornate lobby! People were dashing in their finest attire, the ladies sporting lavish gowns with fur stoles, their faces flushed with excitement. But my eye was immediately drawn to the glorious array of ball gowns and dresses! There were gowns that swished and flowed with every step, embellished with the most beautiful lace and beading, their colors a delicious riot of crimson, emerald, and azure, punctuated with vibrant scarlet and sapphire highlights. They reminded me so much of a blossoming rose garden – absolutely dazzling, just like the elegant ballerinas who graced the stage that evening.
Oh, darlings, the show! It was breathtaking! A captivating blend of elegant moves, playful footwork, and breathtaking grace. This particular performance was a grand spectacle featuring an elaborate ballet scene from a beloved opera, complete with dazzling costumes and dramatic movements. I felt mesmerised by the incredible technique of these Victorian ballet dancers – the powerful leaps, the intricate pirouettes, and the emotion radiating from every movement! Each performance held its own story, expressing every range of emotion – joy, sadness, even mischievous glee – each move a silent storyteller painting pictures of their lives on the stage!
And I am absolutely smitten with these incredible ballet costumes from the era! There’s something so graceful and romantic about the romantic ball gown silhouettes, embellished with intricate trims, layers of tulle, and lavish embellishments! Think rich velvet, delicate lace, silk satin, and those glorious puffs of tulle and crinoline! I swear I could have spent hours just browsing through the shops selling exquisite fabrics, envisioning a myriad of ballet looks for my own future performances. Even the gentlemen's attire was a sight to behold! There were so many impeccably tailored jackets, sharp waistcoats, and immaculately polished shoes, not to mention the striking silk cravats adding pops of vibrant colours to every elegant ensemble. The very air seemed to pulsate with stylish sophistication, with everyone seemingly living life in a stunning fashion montage. It was simply heavenly!
You know, I simply love this time! Victorian Christmas Eve was full of surprises! I mean, there was something about watching the bustling crowds at the market, everyone jostling for the best produce, the smell of freshly baked mince pies hanging in the air, and the sound of carols echoing down the street, that filled my heart with warmth!
Don’t you love these moments that capture the magic of time?
As I left the theatre, I noticed the stars seemed even brighter tonight, twirling with joyful abandonment, creating a spectacular spectacle across the inky black canvas of the night sky. The air hummed with holiday excitement. It felt so good to see how even centuries ago, ballet could be such a unifying force - bringing people together to experience this beautiful artform and creating a sense of wonder and joy! It is definitely proof that some things, like ballet, truly never go out of style, even through the passage of time!
Oh, my dears, as I tuck Magic Meg in for the night and write this, sitting by my crackling fire, I am bursting with inspiration! I must try some Victorian moves myself! I have a feeling my next performance is going to be very special. And if you are ready to get involved with your pink tutu – you could always try that elegant ballet bow pose or maybe some graceful pliés with a beautiful Victorian waltz! You might find this historical twist will add an interesting note to your practice!
Stay tuned for the next installment, dear darlings, because this is only the beginning! Keep dancing!
Until next month!
Lots of love and pink tutu kisses!
Emma.
