Hello darling tutus! It's Emma here, and guess what? This month, Magic Meg and I galloped all the way back to May 5th, 1896, for a truly breathtaking glimpse into the world of ballet back then! I’m thrilled to be back on the blog for our monthly peek into the world of ballet history. We have an incredible trip for you this month and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
My trusty pink sparkly Shire, Magic Meg, snorted with excitement as we stepped back into time. Her golden hooves clinked on the cobbled streets of London, her white mane and tail flowing in the breeze. It’s funny how even in the past, the sparkle and glamour of Magic Meg always drew attention, and people couldn't resist admiring her beauty. My little pink-clad figure must have been a curious sight too. A time-traveling ballerina! Just imagine, strolling through history in my beautiful pink tutu! It's certainly the best way to go through time.
As usual, my rucksack is overflowing with exciting ballet finds from the era. The 19th century was a fascinating time for ballet. As a true ballet enthusiast, I knew exactly where to head first. The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! Imagine the thrill of seeing the world-famous Russian Ballet, "The Imperial Ballet", perform at the historic venue! They were absolutely incredible, showcasing an unprecedented blend of strength and grace! It truly was the pinnacle of ballet artistry. You know I always keep a couple of hours in my schedule for shopping, especially vintage ballet items. What better place than the theatre shops for that! I discovered the most fabulous feathered headbands and silk tights, all in soft pastel colours. They’re going straight into my collection.
Now, let's chat about what else was happening in the world of ballet back in 1896! While the Imperial Ballet was taking London by storm, in France, the iconic Parisian Opera Ballet was flourishing with its own brilliant choreography. Ballet was truly international! It’s fascinating to see how the artistry, beauty, and graceful movements resonated across the globe, and across time! You know, one of the things that always fascinates me about these old time periods is seeing how fashion plays a key role in the world of dance. And you know I love a touch of elegance in my outfits! So it was delightful to observe the beautiful costumes back in 1896, a delicate balance between elegant and revealing. So romantic and feminine. Imagine all the delicate tutus, flowing ribbons, and sparkly fabrics, creating stunning visual experiences! A total fashion inspiration!
We're lucky to have recorded moments of this iconic time period in history! Thankfully, thanks to the wonders of photography, I could see what they looked like as they graced the stage in full splendour. There’s just something about the poise and grace of ballet, it never gets old, especially in these timeless images. And while I’m always thrilled to see ballet in the theatre, nothing quite beats seeing a ballet performance on the street, amidst a bustling, everyday setting! This trip was no exception!
Just as I started to feel a little overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Victorian London, I heard the beautiful music of a travelling ballet troupe! Their costumes were incredible, just imagine, beautiful tutus and silk shirts that sparkled and flowed with every movement! It reminded me of why I love travelling through time and exploring the different eras of ballet.
However, not everything is a complete blast from the past! While exploring the vintage shops on Bond Street, I came across this beautiful antique sewing machine. You won't believe it, but it belonged to a famous ballerina named Clara, who had a little secret passion, you see, sewing tutus in her spare time! She’d take discarded scraps of fabrics and create the most stunning tutus, making them the envy of her fellow dancers. A real talent hidden beneath the world of the dance! It’s really fascinating how those who loved to dance, had a second love hidden beneath it, almost like a little side story to their dancing passion! I just couldn’t resist taking her little handmade tutu home with me. It’s a precious addition to my ballet memorabilia collection, a true gem, just like all the other fantastic items I managed to collect during our trip back in time! It really was such a thrilling time travel adventure. It makes me wonder about all the hidden stories waiting to be discovered on this extraordinary ballet journey! And, it goes without saying, every adventure requires a beautiful pink tutu!
I must be off now to add this latest collection of memories to my time travel blog! But I leave you with this; have you tried on your pink tutu yet today? You know, sometimes, it’s just those little things, that make all the difference, you’ll be amazed! Remember to check out my other adventures at www.pink-tutu.com. Don't forget, until next month, wear your pink tutu with pride and remember to spread the love of ballet!
Your ballet loving friend, Emma
P.S. Until next month, may all your leaps be high and your turns be smooth!
