Hello darling ballet enthusiasts, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! This month, I’m twirling my way through the annals of ballet history, with my trusty steed Magic Meg carrying me on a grand adventure through time. You know the drill, darlings, we're all about the pink tutus, the exquisite elegance, and of course, the most magnificent ballet spectacles in history! And for this particular escapade, we're stepping back to 6th June 1898, a date etched into the heart of ballet history!
This time around, Magic Meg is absolutely glowing, her shimmering pink coat sparkling in the sunlight, a perfect match for my darling tutu. The leather rucksack on my back, already laden with treasures from previous journeys, is just waiting to be filled with the enchanting stories of this era.
So, let’s go back to 1898 and explore the captivating ballet world…
A Royal Ballet Feast in Russia
We arrive in the opulent Imperial Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia. It's brimming with energy! There’s a hush as the music begins. A legendary ballet, La Esmeralda by Cesare Pugni, with a story so enchanting, and movements so graceful, is unfolding before us. This iconic ballet, inspired by Victor Hugo's masterpiece Notre Dame de Paris, features the talented, dazzlingly talented ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska. A dancer so full of life and captivating, she mesmerizes the audience!
In the world of fashion, I’m noticing an abundance of stunning tulle, lace and satin on the elegant women in attendance, and a kaleidoscope of colours to match their vibrant personalities. It's such a treat to see ballet embracing its sartorial flair, and adding to the theatrical magic of the evening. The men are resplendent in their tuxedos and formal attire, perfectly complementing the elegant women, it’s simply delightful.
I’m thrilled to share that in this year, La Esmeralda is captivating audiences not just in St. Petersburg but across Europe. The ballet is such a masterpiece, with every scene echoing its beauty. A ballet classic for a reason, indeed!
A Whirlwind of Creativity in Paris
Following our ballet adventures in St. Petersburg, Magic Meg gallops us to the beautiful, sophisticated, and fashion-forward city of Paris, France. Here, the air crackles with a creative energy as the world of dance is bubbling over with new and exciting ideas. I see dancers moving to the intoxicating rhythms of innovative, expressive ballets. And I can feel the world of ballet is on the cusp of transformation, with ballet masters pushing the boundaries of movement and story telling, creating masterpieces which resonate to this day.
I wander into the enchanting world of “Le Sacre du Printemps”. The world is yet to be introduced to this ground breaking work of artistic genius by Igor Stravinsky, a composition considered truly revolutionary, but that wouldn't be for a few years yet. I have no doubt this is one to look out for in my time-travelling escapades.
Oh, the fashions in Paris! We're talking exquisitely made outfits, beautiful gowns, tailored jackets and flamboyant hats. The chic, and beautifully dressed Parisians, ooze style. The women I meet here are all about embracing their own personal flair, and I'm absolutely smitten!
Time for a Ballet Fashion Extravaganza
Naturally, being a devoted fashion enthusiast, a shopping spree in Paris is essential! We step into one of the grand department stores in the City of Light. The interior is awe inspiring, light and spacious, and the fashion… oh, the fashions! Every fabric, from shimmering silk to fine brocade, begs to be touched.
While Paris’ department stores boast the latest and greatest trends, my heart fluttered when I found myself wandering into the Parisian dance shops and costume houses. There's a shop on Rue de la Paix brimming with glittering tutus, delicate shoes, and flamboyant dance costumes! And, can you believe it? I discovered a dusty box filled with glorious pink tutus, tucked away in the corner!
Imagine, a tutu with an absolutely ravishing embellishment of delicate pearls. Another has beautiful, sweeping tiers and is just waiting for a spirited dancer to twirl and twirl with reckless abandon! Of course, I didn't resist buying one of the stunning creations. My newest acquisition sits proudly in my rucksack! It will take its place amongst the other exquisite finds on my journey through ballet time!
In the Spotlight: American Ballerina Anna Pavlova
Of course, it’s impossible to speak about 1898 and the world of ballet without acknowledging the brilliance and talent of a star that is on the rise – Anna Pavlova! The graceful beauty of her movements, her effortless grace and talent, had begun to captivate the world!
This incredibly talented ballerina would become the star of many of my favorite future ballets! It's such a thrill to get to see her talent at the start of her unforgettable career, just imagine the ballet marvels she is set to create, captivating audiences across the globe! I'm just brimming with excitement to experience more of her phenomenal career and ballet journey in future journeys.
